  3. Scouting in General Scouting is a worldwide youth movement with: over 100 years experience developing young leaders, over 28 million members in 216 countries and territories, and a mission to create a better world.
  4. The Scouting Program Scouting has 5 year-long programs for different age groups, these are called sections. The 8th Ajax Scout Group offers all five program sections radiating out from Westney Heights Public School. Beaver Scouts Cub Scouts Scouts Venturer Scouts Rover Scouts
  5. The Scouting Program What do each of the sections have in common: Mission, Principles, and Practices The Scout Method Weeknight activities that support and lead up to the outdoor activities and service projects
  6. Scouting in General Our mission is to contribute to the education of young people… through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law… to help build a better world where people are self fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.
  7. Scouting in General Scouting is fun, and most youth and adults don’t realize how much they’re learning. The key to this is the Scout Method: A promise and law Learning by doing Membership in small groups Progressive and stimulating programs Commitment to values Use of the outdoors as the key learning resource
  8. Beaver Scouts Ages 5 –7 (Senior Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2) Fun and friendship are the cornerstones of the Beaver program. Through an adventurous program of outdoor activities, creative play, music, and cooperative games, Beavers enjoy time with their friends (and meet new ones), learn how to get along within a group, and develop confidence.
  9. Beaver Scouts Nature walks, short hikes, tree plantings, and family sleepovers give Beavers a taste of outdoor fun; through these activities, Beavers develop an appreciation and a sense of caring for the environment. But don’t take our word on it… James
  10. Cub Scouts Ages 8 –10 (Grades 3, 4, and 5) Challenging hikes, weekend camps, and introduction to water activities like canoeing or kayaking are just a few of the fun outdoor adventures that Cubs enjoy. With the Cub motto of “Do Your Best” from and centre, Cubs are encouraged to try new and challenging activities.
  11. Cub Scouts Learning important first aid skills, paddling a canoe for the first time, or leading a game at camp will open the door for Cubs to try other adventures they never thought possible. But don’t take our word on it… Alexander Johnathan
  12. Scouts Ages 11 –14* (Grades 6, 7, 8, and 9) Scouts enjoy outdoor adventures as part of a team, working together with others to complete thrilling challenges and accomplish goals. *with the option to remain until 16
  13. Scouts Scouts gives every member a chance to be a leader; it might involve running an activity, organizing a camp, or participating with other young people across the province or Canada in a youth forum. But don’t take our word on it… Christian
  14. Venturer Scouts Ages 14 –17 (Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12) Venturersdirect their own development in six key areas: fitness, personal interests, community service, social/cultural/spiritual, and outdoor exploration/adventure.
  15. Venturer Scouts Venturersmeet in a group called a Company; they develop and manage their own program with the mentorship of an adult advisor. But don’t take our word on it… Alisia Kirk
  16. Rover Scouts Ages 18 –26 Rovers often participate in adventurous activities like mountain climbing, white water rafting, or sea kayaking. They often help their local, national, and international communities through service projects such as food drives, park cleanups, tree plantings, and travel to third world countries to build wells, schools, and latrines together with the local Scouting association.
  17. Rover Scouts Rovers meet in a group called a Crew; they develop and manage their own program, often with the help of an experienced advisor.
  18. Support Teams These layers of volunteer and staff support every section carry out the various Scouts Canada programs: National Team Scouts Canada Council Team White Pine Council Area Team Owasco Group Committee 8th Ajax Scout Group Section Team e.g., 8th Ajax Wolf Cub Pack
  19. Group Committee The Group Committee is responsible for the overall operation of the 8th Ajax Scout Group; they manage the recruitment of adults, set budgets, approve section programs, and help find the resources we need. The official roles that comprise our Group Committee will vary, but the one person you can always talk to is the Group Commissioner. Each Section Contact Leader is a member of the Group Committee and can help you find the right person to talk to if you have a question or concern.
  20. Section Team The 8th Ajax Scout Group runs a program in each of Scouts Canada’s five sections (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, and Rovers). The Section Team is made up of the people that plan and deliver the Scouting Program to the youth: the Section Contact Leader, the other leaders in the section, parents, and youth members, especially those in leadership roles.
  21. Volunteers and Leaders Some of our group-wide projects need a team of volunteers in place. Examples of those projects include: Camp Preparation (September and October; others) Apple Day (October) Popcorn Orders (October and November) Fundraisers (at various points during the year) Special Events (at various points during the year) These projects are not weekly commitments, allowing interested volunteers to help out as their schedule allows.
  22. Volunteers and Leaders Each of our sections needs a number of leaders to help plan and deliver the program, manage risks, and lead by example. Leaders undergo screening and training to maintain the standards established by Scouts Canada. Leaders commit to regular participation in section activities, with the understanding that professional and personal commitments might sometimes pull them away from attending every week or activity.
  23. Volunteers and Leaders We have experienced volunteers and leaders in a number of areas, but we are in need of volunteers and leaders for 2014-2015 to ensure continued success. Group Committee Members Group Administrator Group Secretary Group Fundraiser Contact Leader – Scouts Assistant Leaders – Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts We are looking to begin filling these positions this spring, so everything is ready to go for September.
  24. What have we covered? Today we have covered a lot of important information: Who we are What we do What our program looks like The levels of support available The current open volunteer and positions for 8th Ajax
