  2. Some useful language • What is a generalization? • To make general principles or opinions usually about a large group • Why do we make generalizations? How do we use generalizations in English?

Usually: Americans usually prefer coffee to tea • Often: Americans often prefer coffee to tea. • Tend to: Americans tend to prefer coffee to tea. • In general: In general, Americans prefer coffee to tea. • Most/Many: Most American prefer coffee to tea • On the whole: On the whole, Americans prefer coffee to tea • The majority of: The majority of Americans prefer coffee to tea. • Rarely: Americans rarely prefer tea to coffee • Few: Few Americans prefer tea to coffee.

  4. Qualifying Generalizations • What does qualifying a generalization mean? • To point out the limits of a generalization • When should we qualify generalizations? • Maybe when our generalizations could make us seem rude or ignorant or when there are notable exceptions

Generally..., but...: Generally Americans drink coffee, but some prefer tea. • Most..., but...: Most Americans drink coffee, but some prefer tea. • Usually..., but...: Americans usually prefer to drink coffee, but some prefer tea • Often..., but...: Often Americans prefer to drink coffee, but sometimes they prefer tea.

  6. The Encounter: Mistakes • Listen to the encounter • Write down any questions you have or words you don't understand

  8. Why do you think Mr. Schmidt never corrects mistakes? • Make a list of possible explanations. • Make sure one explanation is generous to Schmidt and one is harsh • After listing three ideas, go back and decide which is most likely

  9. Language Practice • Make five generalizations about what Chinese students believe about the best way to learn English • Be ready to share

  10. Discussion Questions • How do you feel about English teachers correcting your mistakes? • What is more important, speaking perfectly or communicating? • How often do you want (should you) be corrected? • What kind of correction do you find to be helpful?

  11. Ping Pong Debate • Should English teachers try to correct all of their students' errors? • Groups will debate the affirmative and negative sides of the issue

  12. School Interview • Differences between Chinese and Western students • Your school newspaper has asked you to interview a Western culture expert about the differences between western and Chinese students • In small groups, write a list of important questions
