Broad Objectives • Reduce the number of meaningless fragmented activities or tasks associated with CT requirements. ~ Combine the many disciplines studied throughout the day or week into one comprehensive unit and tie it to an exciting real life event (the 04 Olympics). • Improve intergroup relations and increase acceptance of different learning abilities ~ STAD like group work

  3. Disciplines • History ~ Intro to the Athens Olympics • Spelling ~ Incorporated into all activities • Math ~ Tallies and sports • Geography~ North, South, East , West • Anatomy ~ Basic anatomy + function • Creative Writing ~ Incorporates all of the above

Specific Objectives of Anatomy Lesson • Students will learn about basic functioning body parts, how they relate to physical activity, and how they must be taken care of (diet, rest, exercise). • Students will work together to spell unfamiliar (and familiar words). (Objectives supported by the CT education framework)

  5. Students construct a body consisting of paper cutouts of: Lungs Heart Muscle Stomach Bone Skin Brain Students determine the function of body in relation to sports: Oxygen Blood Movement Nutrients Structure/Strength Sweat Focus/Concentration Anatomy Lesson Activities

ANATOMY Lungs Heart Muscles Bone Skin Brain Blood Sweat Air Food Students apply anatomy spelling words to sports spelling words to form complete sentences with proper capitalization and punctuation. The Curriculum Conclusion: • Once students have completed the history, spelling, math, anatomy, and geography components of the curriculum they combine all the materials they have acquired throughout the week • Anatomy sentences • Sports and math sentences • Geography and Athens sentences • and work together to form a story for a class travel log labeled “Our Trip to the Summer Olympics in Athens.”

Conclusion • The lesson provided information useful for active living and was tied to the comprehensive Olympic theme. • Meaningful application of CT requirements • Students had motivation to work together rather than against each other. • Increasing respect for one another. • Two subjects (spelling and writing) were combined into one anatomy lesson. All addressed disciplines were combined into the creative writing project. • Reducing fragmentation
