Maximilien Francois Marie Isidore de Robespierre • Founded a newspaper in 1792 • - used paper to attack political leaders • Spokesmen for French Revolution • Guillotined on July 28,1794 • Elected at age 30, member of Third Estate. • (1758-1794) born in Arras, France • Educated first in Arras and then attended college at Louis-le-Grand in Paris • Mother died and father left him • Raised by maternal grandparents

Political Views • Democratic Ideas - emphasis on civil liberty and equality - uncompromising rigidity in applying these ideas to the issue of movement - hostility to all authority won him little support in his moderate legislature • favored giving the vote to all men, not just property owners • Opposed slavery in colonies • wrote a Memorie pour le Sieur Dupond - (Report for Lord Dupond) - against royal absolutism and arbitrary justice

  4. 1778-1783 1778 • March: - chosen by the citizens of Arras a representative - Third Estate of the bailiwick elected him fifth of eight deputies from Artois 1783 • Chancellor of Arras Academy and later president.

  5. 1790 • June: - elected secretary of National Assembly • April: - presided over Jacobins, political club promoting ideas of French Revolution • October: - appointed a judge of Versailles tribunal.

  6. 1791 • May: - all new deputies be elected to the next legislature - to express people’s will. • July: - hastened the vote on the constitution -addresses the Patriots forces - moved in with family member - kept Jacobin club alive • June: - Public prosecutor but then gave it up

  7. Committee of Public Safety • Known as an honest man, the “Incorruptible Robespierre.” • Basic idea about diplomacy was to see everything through the lens of foreign plotters • Robespierre’s failing know within the Committee of Public Safety - colleague wrote “never had the faintest idea about government, administration, and diplomacy.” • Robespierre had Danton denounced and executed on April 5, 1794. - suspicion about Danton and one of his friend

Reign of Terror • Robespierre answered the demonstrators on September 5, promising maximum prices on foodstuff • Revolutionary militia use in interior against counterrevolutionaries and grain hoarders • Objected to pointless executions, protecting those deputies who protested arrest of Girondins and king’s sister • Sickened by massacres condoned by members of National Convention sent to break optioning provinces • Demanded their recall for “dishonoring the Revolution” • Robespierre leads the Reign of Terror
