  1. Sensory Integration Therapy Interventions for Appropriate Responses Symptoms of autism often include trouble in processing sensory information, including the sense of smells, textures, sound, tastes, touch, brightness, etc. These complications make ordinary situations feel overwhelming for children and their families as they tend to isolate them from society. To treat such traits, occupational therapists use sensory integration therapy that involves designed play activities to change the reaction of the brain towards the touch, sound, movement, and vision. A human body is naturally equipped to interpret sensory information to effectively participate in daily life. However, at times, people with special needs simply cannot process their sensory input in the right way. This inability is called as the ’Sensory Processing South Africadisorder’. Sensory processing disorder is present in people who experience developmental disabilities and commonly found in those with autism spectrum disorders. For a child who wakes at night due to extreme sensitivity, the goal set is to improve his/her tolerance of ordinary noises. Likewise, the goal set for a child who hates touching food is to reduce touch sensitivity so that he/she can comfortably consume a meal. The sensory integration therapy for autism interprets, organizes, and modulates sensory information that affects the child’s behavior, daily functionality, communication, and successful participation in daily life.

  2. The occupational therapyfor assessing the child’s sensory system begins with the information provided by caregivers to help the therapist determine which systems are affected. Sensory integration therapy for autism is a technique used through fun and play-based activities, planned by the therapists, to change the brain’s reaction to vision, sound, and touch. Sensory integration therapy is done by specially trained occupational therapists through thorough evaluation and techniques to perform therapy safely and effectively and to help the child benefit. The activities done at the clinics of occupational therapists to treat a sensory disorder include trampolines and swings (movement through space), playing in containers filled with beans (touch), dancing to music These activities fulfill the child’s sensory needs and improve the ability to focus on coursework. Sensory integration therapy is based on facts that the child is either over or under-stimulated by the situation. The aim of sensory integration therapy for autism is to increase the ability of the brain that can help the child function more adaptively in daily activities. For sensory integration therapy, occupational therapists help a child with autism play and behave like other children. During the Sessions, The Therapist Works with The Child to:

  3. Help the child successfully meet the challenges (that are present in him/her) through playful activities Support the child to adapt to his/her behavior with useful strategies Encourage the child to actively participate in activities that are full of fun. A therapy room is designed to make the child play and interact with the occupational therapist and to performs activities that involve sensory input with motion. A child with cognitive and stress-related conditions can also respond well to sensory integration therapy for improved quality of life. It has been observed that the brain can change in response to environmental input or through interactions between the child and the environment. These interactions influence learning and also enhance the rich sensory experiences.
