  1. CALL: +27-824-158-825 TREATMENT OF SENSORY PROCESSING DISORDER IN SOUTH AFRICA We worked with children and teens with sensory processing disorder (SPD). An occupational therapist enables people to fully take part in daily routine tasks, like eating food, showering, going to work (for adults), get focus in class, completing schoolwork, taking part in PE class (for teens and kids). To treat sensory processing disorder in South Africa, first, a person must be evaluated to impose his or her unusual sensory profile. Various people’s understandings process incoming sensory input uniquely. An easy way to understand sensory processing disorder is to consider the possible steps people might react to walking outdoors on a sunny day. Some people turn their faces to the sun and drink in its warm lights, relaxing in the glow. Other people take a hand to their forehead and complain about forgetting their sunglasses at the house. We know people are distinct, and so everyone’s sensory processing is different. So why is this a difficulty? Because some people are so “over-reactive” or “under-reactive” to sensory input that it conflicts with their everyday living. For example, a professor who cannot stand loud noises may struggle in her class. A child under-responsive to sounds may not even notice a crossing guard yelling at him to stop. An evidence-based program for handling sensory processing disorder is sensory integration (SI) therapy given by an occupational therapist (OT). Sensory Integration Therapy improved children’s behavior, function, and motor skills. So, what is SI treatment that Occupational therapists provide? An OT may work on a variety of sensory skills — whatever is most negatively impacting an individual’s ability to function — and will provide step-by-step just- right challenges to address and improve these skills.

  2. As a final note, it should be mentioned that we always hear about the five main senses (Sight, Hearing, Touch, Smell, and Taste). However, to completely understand sensory processing disorder, we must acknowledge the complete seven senses. The two we hear less about are Proprioceptive (body awareness) and Vestibular (balance concerning head position). Occupational therapists will approach different sensory areas in one treatment session, with some areas over-reactive and others under-reactive in the same kid. Sensory Processing South Africa can improve and finding the right occupational therapist to work with an individual who suffers from SPD may be the first step to take.
