  3. History • Land has been invaded many times. • After WWI Kurds were promised their own land. • Instead 5 different countries took their land. • Each of these countries have brutally killed 1000’s of them.

  5. Saddam Hussein • Took power in Iraq by a Coup d’etat • 1980-1988 – Fought in the Iran/Iraq War • 1989 – Attacked neighboring country of Kuwait • 1990 – Fought in the Persian Gulf War

  6. Hussein’s treatment of the Kurds • In late 1980’s Hussein decided to punish the Kurds for supporting Iran in the Iran/Iraq War. • He tore down entire Kurdish cities • Killed 1000’s of Kurds • Put 2 million Kurds into concentration camps

  7. Examples of Brutality • One city was dynamited and bulldozed. Only the trees were left standing. 70,000 people were left homeless. • Another city was bombed. As the people ran away they were sprayed with nerve gas. • In all Hussein killed 300,000 Kurds and put most in unmarked mass graves.

  8. Why does everyone want the land of Kurdistan? • Oil reserves are found under the land. • The headwaters of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are found here.

  9. Core Work • Write an essay comparing Saddam Hussein to Adolf Hitler. • This will count as a test grade and will be collected at the beginning of class tomorrow.
