  1. Constructed Responses A quick guide for improving writing skills

  2. Introduce quotes • Begin sentences with details from the text, not quotation marks. • “You can make sure you won’t change my mind to make yourself more rich” (line 317). • Instead try: Creon feels that it isn’t that important to be married and be in love. He explains to his son, “So, my son, don’t ever throw good sense aside for pleasure, for some woman’s sake” (lines 735-737). • Go BEYOND “says”

  3. Use close reading to analyze quotes. • This means: Use the specific language in the quote to analyze meaning in your explanation. • For example: Antigone, speaking to Creon: "Isn't a man's right to burial decreed by divine justice? I don't consider your pronouncements so important that they can just overrule the unwritten laws of heaven” (lines 805-804). • What does “pronouncements” mean? Why would the laws of heaven be described as “unwritten” ? • Remember eachwordis important. Why did the author use that word? What are the implications?

  4. Explanations using close reading. • "Isn't a man's right to burial decreed by divine justice? I don't consider your pronouncements so important that they can just overrule the unwritten laws of heaven” (lines 805-804). • Sample sentence In her retort to Creon, Antigone implies that she does not value his lowly “pronouncements” over the laws of the gods that she holds to be unchanging and “unwritten.”

  5. Remember the importance of words! • The difference between the almost right word & the right word is really a large matter--it's the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning. -Mark Twain

  6. Examples • When using close reading try not to simply paraphrase the quote, but use the specific language to show what the quote means. • For example: “He said, ‘Father, I’m yours. For me your judgments and the ways you act on them are good-I shall follow them’” (lines 720-722). This quote shows that Haemon is loyal to his father. • How does the quote show he is loyal? What words show that? • How could we change it to use specific language?

  7. Examples…more close reading. • “Sometimes the gods/ lure a man’s mind forward to disaster, / and he thinks evil’s something good. /But then he lives only the briefest time/free of catastrophe” (lines 106-110). This quote was stated by the Chorus and describes Antigone’s situation perfectly. What is being said is the gods lured Antigone into disobeying Creon, which was the disaster. • She asked her sister to, “help these hands take up Polyneices corpse and bury it” (lines 52-53). This quote basically shows that Antigone is trying to bury Polyneices. It also shows that is trying to find support for her actions.

  8. And some more examples… • In her death speech she says, “without lament, without a friend,/and with no marriage song, I’m being led/in this miserable state, along my final road” (lines 312-314), which shows that she is dying without fulfilling dreams and goals. • Heexplains to his son, “So, my son,/ don’t ever throw good sense aside for pleasure,/ for some woman’s sake” (lines 735-737). Creon says this because his son is supposed to be marrying Antigone and he doesn’t want him to give up “good sense” for her.

  9. RATE Review • When you use RATE make sure all 4 parts go towards answering the same question. • You should re-state the question. • You should answerthe question. • You should select a meaningful quote as text support for your answer. • You should explain the quote using close reading.
