  1. The Patriots Won! How did they win? What to do next? Sign a Peace Treaty! Create a new Country!

How did they win? • Geography: Americans know the land; they had Patriot assistance; they were fighting a defensive war • Foreign Help: FRANCE! • Washington’s Leadership: Brilliant! • Guerrilla Warfare: Patriot troops attacked the British every time the British tried to leave a city and move its army to another location!

  3. What is next? A Peace Treaty is Signed! • 1782 British officials and Americans met in Paris • Treaty Terms: • America became an independent nation • Borders to extend to the Mississippi River • Florida to be returned to Spain

  4. Create a new Government! • Articles of Confederation ~Too Weak ~No President ~No power to tax Would the new country survive? ~Convention: states to send representatives to Philadelphia

  5. United States Constitution • Strong Federal Government • Compromises • Union!

  6. Levels of Government • FEDERAL = United States - Washington D.C. • STATE = Florida • LOCAL = Palm Coast

  7. Federal Government 3 Branches of government: • Legislative – makes the laws, Congress • Executive – enforces the laws, President • Judicial - interprets the laws, Courts (Supreme, Appellate, District)

  8. Checks and Balances • Each Branch of government can limit the power of the other two branches, this is called “Checks and Balances”

Genius!!!Is it Albert Einstein? • The U.S. Constitution can be changed! • The Amendment process – there are 2 ways to change the Constitution • ¾ of state legislatures approve the amendment • Special amendment conventions approved in ¾ of the states. • The Bill of Rights = the first 10 Amendments
