Schlegel seeks to compare control of women • Control of sex is most significant indicator. • But value on premarital virginity has problems as a measure of control • Premarital virginity may be followed by marital promiscuity. • Premarital virginity may be about control of young rather than control of females.

  4. Value on Virginity is about Inheritance • Low status males may force marriage to higher status family by impregnating girl. • Family seeks groom who brings as much to the family. • Assures status of descendents • As education replaces inheritance value on virginity decreases.
