  6. MLBAM Stats and Data Capture THE PITCH-F/X SYSTEM • Optical tracking system captures detailed data describing pitch velocity, movement and location • Outputs raw data as well as graphical renderings of pitch trajectory and strike zone • Permanent installation of two cameras mounted in weather-tight enclosures • Permanent power and video cabling between cameras and central computer, consistent with broadcast-quality connections • Central computer mounted in operations area such as scoreboard control room

  7. MLBAM Stats and Data Capture HOW DOES IT WORK? • Two cameras at high home and high first base • Each camera records ~60 images per second, roughly 30 total images per pitch • Ball is tracked along entire trajectory from release point to termination • Manual operator verifies data and performs routine maintenance

  8. MLBAM Stats and Data Capture HOW DOES IT WORK? • Data is transmitted back to a central computer that aggregates and interprets the data • Software uses images to calculate equations of motion and determine the ball’s position at any point along the trajectory • Manual operator evaluates data and can reject any invalid or incomplete data • Accuracy is verified by computing offset between each camera’s measurement of each point along the trajectory: zero difference indicates system has accurately centered the pitch • Pitch data also plotted against video to verify accuracy
