  1. Demography & Population AGENDA Population Line up What is demography? World Population Graphing Activity Population Trends TED TALK Technological Change and Population Growth (Jigsaw)

  2. Population • Is the number of people living in a space • Population rates change overtime due to birth rates, death rates, immigration and emigration • In order to understand population changes we must learn about a fascinating subject called DEMOGRAPHY

  3. Demography • Study of human population • Important tool for government and business as they rely on demographic data to help them predict future • Helps explain cause and effects of population change within local communities, across Canada and throughout the rest of the world • 90% of human population occupies 20% of Earths land area.

  4. World Population Graphing Activity • Using the chart on the right “World Population growth since Common Era” • Using a line graph, graph the data • Y-axis = Population • X-Axis= Date (graph every other date) • Answer questions • 2, 3, 4, 5a, b) I

  5. The Population Explosion(1st Trend) • Population explosion that began in latter half of 1600’s and accelerated through 1900s and into the 21st century • 1960- the worlds population reached 3 billion • 40 years later, in 1999, the population had doubled to 6 billion • Consider what effect this growth had on • People • Governments • Economic systems in the letter half of the 20th century • In 20 years the worlds population had to provide for twice as many !

  6. The Declining Growth (2nd Trend) • At first it appears the decline in the worlds growth rate since 1980 seems insignificant • Reduction from 2.31 percent in 1980 to 1.25 in 2007 seems small • Actually 1.25 is considered a high rate of growth • Magnitude of decline is slightly hidden by the fact different countries of the world were experiencing two different population trends

  7. TED TALK- Hans Roslingon Global population growth • http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/hans_rosling_on_global_population_growth.html

  8. Technological Change and Population Growth • At different times in human history, revolutionary discoveries have produced changes in the way people live and the carrying capacity of Earth • Carrying Capacity # of people that the worlds recourses can support using the technology that exists at that time • We will learn about relationships among technology, lifestyle and population
