  4. One voice Can be heard by millions Egyptian pro-democracy protesters are embracing Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Twitpic. The pictures and video making it to the internet are, in a word, stunning.

  5. Role of Traditional Media • Newspapers /Television are no longer the most relevant medium for information • Perceived as having a slant or agenda • Not agile enough to respond to new information

  6. Information Management – The Expectations are Changing….. • Information is available but may not be accurate or who you want speaking on your behalf • The public expects answers right now – and other information sources are making that information available to them…

  7. The times they are a changin’ • You can now know, almost immediately, what is working and what isn’t. • Adapt in real time to meet a need.

Impact of Social Media Let’s say “Bob the Builder” has an issue, and complains about it on Twitter and Facebook: • 25 people comment on Facebook • 18 repost the complaint on Twitter • Average Facebook User has 130 Friends • Average Twitter User has 300 Followers • 8,780 People have now viewed Bob’s complaint.

  9. Impact of Social Media • You can track everything – online • Who is checking in the site for updates. • How many “Likes” you have on Facebook.

  10. Impact of Social Media Here’s why it’s very important: • About 70% of people turn to their family and friends and ask for advice when making a decision. • Where are people talking to their friends and family recently? Social Media.
