  2. America in 1800 • Oregon Territory: claimed by Russia, Spain, England & the United States • Louisiana Territory: claimed by Spain who would give it to France. Home to Native Americans • As population grows pioneersmove west to farm and help the nation spread out

  3. Jefferson: Our 3rd President • Elected in 1800: a bloodless revolutionthat shifted power from Federalists to Republicans • The Electoral College tied and the House of Representatives voted to break the tie • As the first Republican president Jefferson decreased the size of government and ended many federalist programs

  4. Marbury vs. Madison • Jefferson did not want to honor Adams’ last minute appointments • The Supreme Court, under Chief Justice John Marshall, declared this unconstitutional and established Judicial Review.

  5. The Louisiana Purchase • Purchased from France for $15 million • Gave the US control of New Orleans and the Mississippi River • Doubled the size of the US. • Went against Jefferson’s belief of a strict construction of the Constitution • Gave US greater control of North America

  6. Lewis & Clark • Led the Corps of Discovery • Departed from St. Louisand traveled on the Missouri River to the Rocky Mountains to the Columbia River to the Pacific Ocean • Assisted by Sacagawea • Created accurate maps that would lead to greater exploration. • Zebulon Pikeexplored the southern Rockies

Challenges to Neutrality • American ships were being attacked at sea and sailorsimpressed • Jefferson issued the Embargo Actending all foreign trade • This hurt the American economy • Madison limited the Embargo Act • England angered by this encouraged Native Americans, led by Tecumseh, to attack Americans • War Hawks called for war with England

War of 1812: The Second War for Independence • Fighting took place on Lake Erie and Americans invaded Canada • The British invaded Washington, DC and burned down the White House • At the Battle of Fort McHenry, Francis Scott Keywrote the Star Spangled Banner • War ended in 1814 with the Treaty of Ghent

  9. Results of the War of 1812 • Less Reliant on foreign trade • Weakened Native Americans • Nationalism (Pride in our country) Two weeks after the war was over Americans had a great victory of the Battle of New Orleans crushing the British Navy and proving their independence for once and for all!
