Details of life in the historical community are explored as readers learn about everything from colonial shopping, to church and government.” Reading Level: 3.5 (Scholastic) or 6.2 (Accelerated Reader Application to Unit: This book applies to learning goal five of my Unit that discusses the capital’s moving from Jamestown to Williamsburg.

  3. Virginia: Life in the Thirteen Colonies Pobst, S. (2004). Virginia: Life in the Thirteen Colonies. Children’s Press. ”In this volume on Virginia, part of the Life in the Thirteen Colonies series, Pobst traces social and political changes and events during the colonial period. She presents the ways of life of both the Powhatan Indians and the English colonists, and she does not overlook the violent aspects of the history: cannibalism at Jamestown; warfare between settlers and Indians; brutality toward slaves.” Reading Level: 6.0 Application to Unit: This discusses learning goal one and learning goal three of my unit by discussing everyday life in colonial Virginia and how slavery impacted colonial life.

Inlandia Press. This book discusses the movement of people from Ulster, Ireland and where they settled in the United States. It also discusses the way they lived and their culture and how it molded government and religion in the places they settled. Reading Level: 6.2 Application to Unit: This applies to my unit through learning goal 4, by discussing how the Scotch Irish culture molded Virginian culture.

The book covers the arrival of settlers in 1607 and the challenges they faced. The interactions (negative and positive) that they had with Native Americans. It also talks about the Virginia Colony and how the colony evolved over the span of almost a hundred years. Reading level: 5.8 Application to Unit: New Beginnings applies to learning goal 3 by covering information on everyday life in the Virginia colony.

Puffin “This book presents six stories about African-Americans who contributed to the movement for freedom from slavery.” Reading Level: 5.2 Application to Unit: Long Journey Home connects to learning goal 3 by sharing the stories and perspectives of African Americans that contributed to the freedom movement.

Celebration Press. “This book discusses how paper money became popular.” Reading Level: 5.8 Application to Unit: This book relates to learning goal 2; which requires student to explain what bartering is. This also relates to my lesson where I discuss how during colonial times, settlers did not have an abundance of paper money.

Child’s World. “This book introduces bartering and explains what it is, its benefits and challenges, and what makes a good transaction.” Reading Level: 3.5 Application to Unit: This book relates to learning goal three of my unit by explaining what bartering is and teaches children how to barter.
