  1. Winter is nature’s way of saying, “Up Yours.” Robert Bryne

  2. Journal • If you could have one more day of winter break, what would you do with it?

  3. Looking Ahead • 2 more weeks refining the analysis question • By Jan 17th you will need a copy of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway • Argumentation

  4. The Test • Multiple Choice Section (1 hour – 54ish questions) • 3 essays: Analysis question (the only TW we have done) Argumentation question (you make an argument) Synthesis question (you read several sources and site them in your argument)

  5. TIMED MC Practice • We are going to try one ….TIMED • You get one minute per question. • Attack it as you like, but I think it could be worth scanning the questions to see what you should be looking for (without looking at answer options)

  6. Meet with Your Partner • You will have 10 minutes to meet with those in the class that covered the same topic as you. • Next class, you will give a BRIEF presentation together. • You will have 3 minutes to cover the 3 most important events for the class. • You will need to briefly explain the event and why it was important.

  7. Connotation: + - or N • Poor • Wretch • Starves • Wanders • Laws • New • Living • Citizens • Invisible • Power • Metamorphosis • Blood • Grandfather • Married • Alma Mater • Posterity • Prejudices • Arts • Vigor • Circle

  8. Timed Write Question Practice • I will give you 20 minutes. • I would like you to read, annotate and write a thesis for the question.

  9. Thesis check • Does your thesis: include the word “diction” connect how diction is used to convey his attitude BRIEFLY mention what his attitude is

  10. Once you have a thesis you like - • Create a list of words you would use to prove your thesis in the essay because you cannot talk about diction without mentioning specific words

  11. Homework • Sentence Structure handout • We are getting good at WHAT we say….not it’s time to look at HOW we say it.
