  3. Inflorescence Type I: umbellate or racemose and enclosed in bracts • Type II: paniculate-cymose with strictly opposite flowers • Type III: paniculate-cymose with alternate lateral flowers.

  4. Flowers bisexual or unisexual (then dioecious). • Tepals 6, in 2 whorls. • Stamens in whorls of 3, inner whorls with glands. • Anthers dehiscing by 2 or 4 valves. • Ovary superior. • Ovule 1. • Fruit a drupe, borne on more or less enlarged cupule of perianth remains.
