  2. Why Go West? Describe how this picture represents the idea of Manifest Destiny. What in the picture shows this specifically?

  3. What did pioneers travel with? You and your family are moving West in the California Gold Rush. Create a list of items that you would need to take with you in your covered wagon. Remember that there is limited space and that the journey is very long!

  4. What challenges did pioneer families face? The book depicts a pioneer family fording across a river. In a simulated journal, write as though you were in the covered wagon with them. What do you see? What are some other challenges you meet while traveling?
