  1. The Filipinos in the old society were divided into three (3) different classes; Each with it’s own unique characteristics.

  2. Maharlika :

  3. The First Class is called the Maharlika Class. The Maharlika consisted of the rich and powerful. This class included the Datu and his family

  4. and relatives. Lakan and Gat were the words used to address the men who belonged to this class. These names (titles) were also

  5. placed or included at the beginning of their last names. The Datu’s wife was also known as the Dayang.

  6. Timawa:

  7. The Timawa also known as the “Freemen” were the second class of people. At this time you could call them your “Daily Average

  8. Citizens.” There were different ways on how Timawa people got their freedom. Some bought it, others were given freedom,

  9. or some were already born with their freedom. But all Timawa were expected to be completely loyal to their Datu.They were

  10. Free to choose their own occupation, as soldiers, merchants, etc. They were also free to pick their own wives..

  11. They could have servants (alipin) and they can also own land and other properties.

  12. Alipin:

  13. Alipin also known as slaves were the lowest class ofpeople. There were two (2) kinds of slaves – Aliping namamahay

  14. and Aliping Saguiguilid. Aliping namamahay could have a house (usually within the property of his master) and could

  15. Marry with the permission of their master.

  16. The other kind – Aliping Saguiguilid lives with his or her master forever even when the master dies It is said that the aliping saguiguilid

  17. would be burried alive He or She could own no properties but could marry only with permission from their master.

  18. The reason why there are social classes is so the leader can tell about his people. And the Datu can keep peace and order.

  19. We can compare the classes from the past and present but there has been some changes.

  20. There are no more slaves and we already have a government and a president to rule the country.

  21. A comparison of classes from past to present:

  22. Maharlika = Rich/Wealthy Eg. Zobel de Ayala and Family Henry Sy and Family

  23. Timawa = Average citizens Eg. Us.

  24. Alipin=Slaves or poor people, those living in poverty Eg. Servants or the vendors, homeless people
