  1. Tips for Choosing the Right Kind of Avocados Avocados are the fruits with an interesting temperament. Like babies sleep soundly one minute and start crying and screaming the next minute, avocados can be found similar to a hard rock at the grocery store one day and then come as a ripe fruit the next minute. Although it is really impossible to understand fully how to pick the right kind of California avocados, once you learn the basics, avocado shopping will become really fun for you. Without letting the temperamental fruit get the better of you, you surely deserve the best of the best when it comes to topping the toast, fattening up the salad or even mashing it onto the guac. Here are the insider secrets for finding the perfect avocado variety. 1.Press Down By the Stem The delicate fruit which is avocado can be checked for ripeness by checking near the stem and by squeezing it a little. One should however not press the same on the sides. This bruises the green part which actually has to be eaten. Instead, one should press down lightly with same amount of pressure used to press the mouse, on the top of the avocado by the stem. If the fruit gives easily and retains its shape, avocado is ready to eat. If there is a finger dent, the avocado has become overripe, and could have even turned brown inside. 2.Flick the Stem Another smart method to identify the ripeness of the avocado is to flick the small stem off the fruit. If it comes off easily and underneath is the green portion, the avocado can be consumed as it is ripe. If the stem doesn’t come off easily, or you see the brown underneath, the avocado is not yet ripe or it is even overripe, which then makes it unusable. 3.Never Depend on the Colour The colour of the avocado fruit doesn’t determine the actual state of the fruit. There are hundreds of different varieties of the fruit which turn into different colours as they get ripe. While the Hass Avocado turns dark green or black as it ripens, it is wise to check and see what kind of avocados one is buying. For Hass avocados, you can start by opting for a dark coloured avocado, and then perform the squeeze test. 4.No Need to Worry About the Texture The texture of the skin of avocado does not determine the ripeness of the avocado. Every other variety of avocados has a different version of the texture. Some common examples can be – Fuerte, Bacon, and Zutano avocados have smooth skin while the Gwen, Reed, and Hass avocados have pebbling, according to the experts.

  2. 5.Also Avoid Dark Blemishes If there is any form of discolouration or patches on the fruit, it is a sign the fruit is a prime. Avoid the fruit with dark blemishes on the skin. The over soft skin of the avocado is another sign that the fruit is ripe with too many blemishes. 6.Avoid Buying in Bulk If you are planning to eat your avocados throughout the week, one should stagger the ripeness. If you decide to order the avocado in bulk, they could ripen on the same day. If however, you still decide to buy in bulk and stay the course of saving some money, it is wise to store the avocados in the refrigerator so the ripening process is slowed down.
