  3. What is an Eating Disorder? • Extreme or harmful eating behavior that can cause serious illness or even death • Obsession with food and weight that can harm a person’s physical and psychological well-being Main Types: • Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia • Overeating or Binge Eating

  4. What Causes Eating Disorder? • Not known exactly! • Pressure • Media • Peers • Models • Appearance; start diet • Stress • Control • Chemical • Defect in chemical messengers in the brain

Anorexia Nervosa • Disorder in which the irrational fear of becoming obese results in severe weight lost from self-imposed starvation • Symptoms include: • Low calorie intake • Obsession with exercise • Emotional problems • Unnatural interest in food • Distorted body image • Denial of eating problem • Consequences: loss of bone density, low body temp, slowed metabolism, heart problems, and reduction of organ size

  6. Bulimia Nervosa • Disorder in which some form of purging or clearing of the digestive tract follows cycles of overeating • Symptoms: • Fast/follows strict diet then binges • After eating causes vomiting • Distorted body image • Similar to Anorexia • Consequences: dehydration, kidney damage, irregular heartbeat, destroys tooth enamel, causes tooth decay, damages tissue of stomach, esophagus and mouth
