Gintama: Benizakura Arc/ Gintama (series) • Created by Hideki Sorachi • Series – 2006, Film – 2007 • Genres: Comedy, parody, sci-fi, samurai • Plot summary: Set in Edo (Tokyo) which has been invaded and conquered by aliens called the Amanto. Plot follows life from the POV of samurai Sakata Gintoki, who works as a Yorozuya (freelancer/odd jobs person) alongside ShinuraShinpachi and Kagura – a Yato Clan alien. • Most of the characters and some events are based on historical events and figures. E.g: All of the Shinsengumi members are based on real people and so are the Kiheitai.

Samurai Champloo (2004) • Created by Shinichiro Watanabe • Genres: Chanbara, comedy, drama, samurai • Set in Edo (Tokyo) during the Edo period with an anachronistic, predominantly hip-hop setting. Follows three people, Mugena swordsman/former pirate, Jin a ronin and Fuu who is on a quest to find the ‘samurai who smells of sunflowers’

List of texts for: Samurai focus’ • Gintama: BenizakuraArc (film)/ Gintama(series)(2007/6) • Blade of the Immortal (2008, TV) – About an immortal cursed samurai who has to kill 1000 people to become mortal • The Twilight Samurai (2002, Film) – About a samurai employed as bureaucrat who becomes subject to conspiracies against him. • The Last Samurai – You’ve probably seen it • Sket Dance (2011, TV)– Has a character called TakemitsuShinzo who is captain of the kendo club, he claims to want to be a samurai – different representation of a samurai more likened to Gintama etc • Samurai Champloo (2004,Tv) – Ditto earlier

List of texts for: Horror focus’ • Shingeki no Kyojin/Attack on Titan (2013,TV) – Set in a world where the remnants of the human population live inside a system of concentric 50ft walls due to the Titans/Eotenas/Kyojin (gigantic humanoid creatures that devour humans only). • The story centres around the life of Eren Jaeger (GER) and his adoptive sister Mikasa Ackerman (JAP) and Armin Arlet (SWE). Plus their life in military as they vow to kill all the Titans and see the outside (outside of the walls) • Night Head Genesis(2006,TV) – Follows the life of two young brothers (the Kiriharas) who were cast out by their parents due to their paranormal abilities. They are given to a research centre in which they are a studied and tested on but escape 15 yrs later. • “It is said that 70% of the human brain capacity is unused. If humans possess incredible power, it is strongly believed to be lying dormant within this region. This unused 70% brain capacity is known as "Night Head"
