  1. ASTI Transportation Systems MoDOT I-44 Smart Work Zone System St. Louis County Noah Jenkin ASTI Transportation Systems, Inc. Brian Umfleet MoDOT St. Louis District

  2. Project Location St. Louis County I-44 Antire Road to Lewis Road

  3. Construction Scope of Work? I-44 Pavement Replacement at Antire Lane Shift and Crossover Configuration

  4. WhyI-44 ? • Responsive To Customers Needs • Heavy Commuter Traffic Route • Major Truck Freight Route • Lack Of Parallel Routes in close proximity

  5. Why use Smart Work Zone? • Accurate Real-Time Information • Helps Manage Traffic and Work Zone Delays • Real Time and Accurate Information • Reduce Work Zone Crashes

  6. Smart Work Zone System Goals • The goal of this system is to provide advance traffic condition information to motorists at key decision points due to construction activity. • Alternate Routing • Drive Time Through The Work Zone • Speeds Ahead • Slowed/Stopped Traffic Ahead

  7. Tremendous Specification!!! • Very specific. • Hardware reliability- Autonomy, auto alerts for low battery voltage, sensor must have min 230 watts of solar. • Performance percentages for data collection- i.e.. volume data 5% of truth. • All current and historical traffic data, must be available through project webpage • Clear testing plan to verify all performance measure are satisfied.

  8. ASTI’s System Hardware • Real-Time Workzone Management Systems • 7, Queue Trailers- Wavetronix HD Technology • 4, Wanco VMS • 2, BlueToad Bluetooth sensors • Digital Communications Package • ASTI’s CHIPS Software/Webpage • How It works- web based, polling.

  9. CHIPS Software Thresholds • Speeds greater than 40mph: • STAY ALERT • DO NOT TEXT AND DRIVE • Speeds between 15 mph and 40 mph: SLOWED TRAFFIC Y MILES- ahead • XX MINS 109 to 141- route • Speeds less than 15 mph: • STOPEED TRAFFIC Y MILES- ahead • XX MINS 109 TO 141- route

  10. MoDOT Was Hands On • MoDOT Overrode The VMS To Increase System Effectiveness. • Accident Past Lewis Road • Roadwork Mile Marker 269 • 1 Lane Traffic • Lane Closures • Lane Shifts Ahead

  11. Results • MoDOT Received Traffic Data 24/7 Which Allowed Them To Better Manage Traffic • Motorists Received Accurate Real-Time Traffic Information 24/7 • Aided In Preventing Incidents • Immediate Notification Of Delays • MoDOT Viewed This Particular Smart Work Zone As A Big Success Story • MoDOT Looking For Future Opportunities To Use Smart Work Zone Technology
