  1. Corinthians #6 The Resurrection & Concluding Matters 1Corinthians 15-16; 2Corinthians

  2. Corinthians #6- The Resurrection • In chp.15, we see the final corrective instruction of the first epistle. • The nature of the problem to be corrected is outlined in v.12: “Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?”

  3. Corinthians #6- The Resurrection • But this is not the beginning of the chapter. As the previous lesson showed, much of the instruction of Corinthians is found first upon a premise. The premise here is found in vv.1-11: >>>>The Essentials of the Gospel<<<< 1. It had been preached, received, & stood upon, v.1 2. It produced salvation if held fast, v.2 3. Christ died for our sins, v.3 4. He was buried, v.4a 5. He rose again the third day, v.4b 6. He appeared to many as proof, vv.5-8 7. It had been preached & believed in Corinth, vv.9-11.

  4. Corinthians #6- The Resurrection • So, what’s the problem? • Again, v.12- They had left the purity of the essentials of the gospel for other beliefs! • Paul shows their illogical position: If there is no resurrection of the dead, then… >Christ is not raised,v.13 >our preaching is vain,v.14a >and your faith is vain,v.14b >those asleep in Christ (physically dead) have perished,v.18 >we are of all men most to be pitied,v.19!!!

  5. Corinthians #6- The Resurrection • But…. You’re wrong--Christ has been raised!!!v.20a • So instead of the previous scenario: >Christ is the first fruits of those asleep, v.20b >Logically, all die as in Adam & all will live in Christ, v.21 >With God, there is order, v.22 >After this resurrection, the kingdom will be delivered up to the Father, v.23 >Until then, death will reign, vv.25-28 >If these this is not true, several things make no logical sense, vv.29-32

  6. Corinthians #6- The Resurrection • In vv.35ff, Paul deals with potential questions & objections to his corrective instruction: -How are the dead raise & with what kind of body?v.35 vv.36-49: >must die first like grain,vv.36-37 >res. body will be as God desires,v.38 >will be heavenly- not earthly,vv.39-41 >will imperishable/spiritual- not perishable/natural,vv.42-49 • So, what’s the point of all of this???

  7. Corinthians #6- The Resurrection • A couple actually: 1. Flesh & blood must die and decay in order to be made fit for imperishability in heaven,v.50. 2. Understand the events of the End: -not all will sleep, but all will be changed,v.51 -the dead will be raised, and the living will be changed,vv.52-54 -Death’s reign will be ended,vv.55-56 -Christ’s triumph will be completed,v.57 Therefore, be steadfast, immovable, & always abounding in the Lord’s work so that you will be ready!v.58

  8. Corinthians #6- Concluding Matters • From1Corinthians 16regarding The Collection for the Saints: >Uniformity among all the churches of the command,v.16 >To be done on the First day of the Week,v.2a >Result of Purpose (put aside, save),v.2b >Based upon Prospering,v.2c >To Streamline the Process,v.2d >To be administered with Propriety,vv.3-4(see also2Cor.8:18-21) • Now for 2Corinthians….

  9. Corinthians #6- Concluding Matters • 2Corinthians 16was written as a follow-up to the first epistle within months of the first. • Probably written upon the return of Titus (who delivered the first letter) and based upon his report of the Corinthian reception of it. • 2Corinthians seems to have 3 purposes: 1. to express joy at their favorable reception of the first letter, chps. 1-7 2. to remind them to complete their commitment to the poor saints,chps.8-9 3. to defend Paul’s apostolic authority,10-13.

  10. Corinthians #6- Concluding Matters • 1. To express joy at their favorable reception of the first letter, chps. 1-7 Note that the Corinthians had: >at least partially understood and obeyed the previous letter,1:12-14 >Paul did not want to come to them in sorrow at their lack of repentance,2:1-4 >They had dealt with the incestuous relationship of1Cor.5and he repented. >So they are now told to reaffirm & accept him,2:5-11.

  11. Corinthians #6- Concluding Matters • 1. To express joy at their favorable reception of the first letter, chps. 1-7 They were also reminded that: >they were Paul’s commendation,3:1-3 >that the Old Law (Old Testament) was done away,3:7-18 >so that if his gospel was veiled, it was done so to them by Satan, 4:3ff >their earthly tent was to be destroyed, 5:1-10 >therefore, they should live in preparation for the next life,5:11-21

  12. Corinthians #6- Concluding Matters • Other notables from 2Corinthians: They were reminded to >complete their promised contribution to the poor saints, chps.8-9. >of the purity & simplicity of devotion to Christ: don’t be led away from it, 11:3 >And were taught regarding the third heaven as a reminder of Paul’s apostolic authority to command these things of them, 12:1ff.
