Patent Exploitation Initiative Change of German law relating to inventions of employees(§42 ArbEG, Feb. 2002) • „Property-owner“ of academic inventions are the universities Public funded „Patent Exploitation Initiative“ • Establishment of a professional patent and technology licensing infrastructure at universities • Establishment of an university-IPR-policy Foundation of patent licensing offices at all German universities • PROvendis GmbH as a patent marketing agency for 23 universities of NRW offers companies exclusive access to inventions and patents of over 20.000 scientists 15

Science-to-Business PreSeedTechnology-Transfer Competition Objective To bridge the gap between academic research and application in industry by funding the utilisation of university inventions, based on excellent R&D-results: • financial aid for R&D inside the university • evaluation of inventions and concepts, prototyping • grant aid of patent application • support of entrepreneurs and start-ups outside the universities • General Conditions • One call each year (next call will start in March 2010) • 4.3 Mio. € financial aid for the last two calls 17
