  1. STRATEGY BITES BACK Some provocative questions for more creative strategy-making in the boardroom.

  2. So what is our organization’s strategy style? • Is it formal,cool or funky? • What would you like our strategy to be?

  3. How does our strategy look to: A) The tea lady? B) The most junior recruit? C) The biggest customer we lost? D) Our biggest competitor?

  4. If our strategy was a dress, what kind of dress would it be? (See Chapter 2 Page 41)

  5. Have we been playing a set/fixed strategy or are we making it up as we move along? Is there anything wrong with just making it up? How have we been playing our strategy?

  6. Think of our strategy as a beautiful rug… What would it look like? Why might an old Persian rug be the ideal metaphor for perfect strategy?

  7. Richard Branson is our CEO for the day… • How would our strategy change? • Would it be for better or worse?

  8. Softer Strategy? • If we decided to adopt a kinder, gentler strategy, what would it look like?

  9. Which organization seems like a perfect fit for a merger? • Why might it be a disaster?

  10. Describe three different/distinct groups in our company. • What are the different directions each might want to take the company? • Where is the common thread?

  11. If you had a time machine and were allowed only one trip, which business decision your organization is currently making would you like to know about in advance, and why?

  12. You need to appoint a new head of corporate planning. Which of the following movie characters would be best suited to your organization? Why so? • Vito Corleone • Luke Skywalker • Indiana Jones • Zorro • Willy Wonka • Shrek • The shark in Jaws • Rick in Casablanca • The Terminator • One or more of the characters in The Wizard of Oz • King Kong • Bonnie and/or Clyde

  13. Which strategy questions never get asked, but should be the first ones we should get answers to?

  14. You enter a cab inNew York, Paris, Moscow or Hong Kong. The cab driver asks you “where do you work and what does your company do?” 1. What do you answer first? Why? 2. Does your company name’s speak for itself? 3. What one sentence description would be the most exciting?
