  3. PRONOMINAL VERBS Pronominal verbs are verbs that need a reflexive pronoun in addition to a subject pronoun, because the subject(s) performing the action of the verb are the same as the object(s) being acted upon.Nous nous habillons. We're getting dressed (dressing ourselves). Tu te baignes. You're taking a bath (bathing yourself).

  4. PRONOMINAL VERBS The pronominal voiceis much more common in French than in English - many French verbs that require the pronominal voice are equivalent to the active voice in English. In French, you can recognize pronominal verbs by the se or s’ which precedes the infinitive.

  5. PRONOMINAL VERBS There are two steps in conjugating pronominal verbs. First, take the reflexive pronounse or s’, change it to agree with the subject of the verb, and place it directly in front of the verb. Here are the reflexive pronouns: Je – me / Tu – te / il, elle, on, ils, elles – se/ Nous – nous / Vous - vous Then, as with all verbs, conjugate the infinitive according to whether it is an -er, -ir, -re, or irregular verb.

  6. PRONOMINAL VERBSExemples Se brosser Se doucher to brush to shower Je me brosse Je me douche Tu te brosses Tu te douches Il se brosse Il se douche Nous nous brossons Nous nous douchons Vous vous brossez Vous vous douchez Ils se brossent Ils se douchent

  7. À la négation… Se lever S’habiller Je neme lèvepas Je nem’habillepas I get up I get dressed Tu ne te lèves pas Tu ne t’habillespas Il ne se lève pas Il ne s’habille pas Nous ne nous levons pas Nous ne nous habillons pas Vous ne vous levez pas Vous ne vous habillez pas Ils ne se lèvent pas Ils ne s’habillent pas Remember that –E/ -ES and –ENT are NOT pronounced!

  8. REFLEXIVE VERBS The most common pronominal verbsare reflexive verbs, which indicate that the subject of the verb is performing the action upon himself, herself, or itself. Reflexive verbs mainly have to do with parts of the body, clothing, personal circumstance, or location.

  10. REFLEXIVE VERBS Note that many reflexive verbs also have a non-reflexive use; that is, they can describe someone performing the action of the verb on someone or something else:Elle se promène.She's taking a walk. Vs.Elle promène le chien. She's taking the dog for a walk.Je me laveles mains.I'm washing my hands. Vs.Je lave le bébé.I'm washing the baby.

  11. REFLEXIVE VERBS When referring to parts of the body, the French possessive adjective is rarely used (mon, ma, mes, ton, ta, tes, etc.) Instead, this possession is indicated with the reflexive pronoun and the definite article (le, la, l’, les) precedes the body part.
