BRIEF HISTORY • Sweden emerged as an independant country in the Middle Ages and during the 17th Century the Swedish empire expanded and became one of the strongest countries in Europe • This empire weakened when the eastern half of Sweden was lost to Russia in 1809. Since then Sweden has been neutral in both World Wars and has developed a peace ethos, taking part in no war since 1814.
