  1. Enhancing Ocean Science Literacy through NOAA Ocean Exploration2007 Alaska Marine Science SymposiumAnchorage, AlaskaJanuary 23, 2007 Paula Keener-Chavis, Director Education ProgramsNOAA Ocean Exploration Program

  2. Presentation Overview • NOAA Ocean Exploration (OE) Program • OE Education Program • Exploring Alaska’s Seamounts Expedition • Learning Ocean Science through Ocean Exploration • Telepresence Capabilities through New NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer • Exploring Alaska’s Seamounts Video

  3. Alvin Dive Coverage, 1964-2005 4162 Dives, Not to Scale

  4. Alvin Dive Coverage, 1964-2005 4162 Dives, Not to Scale

  5. “New” Alvin - ~4,000 more dives by 2050 NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer – Operational by 2008 25,000+ seamounts 10,000+ km of trenches 50,000+ km of mid-ocean ridge Southern Ocean largely unexplored 99% of biosphere is contained in water column Arctic Ocean is the least explored ocean on the planet

  6. Discovering Earth’s Final Frontier: A U.S. Strategy for Ocean Exploration, 2000 “We cannot protect what we do not know, and thus, without ocean exploration, we are ignorant of what needs to be conserved in a realm that covers most of the surface of the Earth. With so much still unexplored…, the ocean can be viewed as the final frontier on Earth.”

  7. NOAA OE Program Objectives • Map the physical and dynamic aspects of ocean regions • Understand ocean dynamics at new scales • Develop new sensors and tools • Reaching out in new ways to stakeholders to improve the literacy of learners of all ages with respect to ocean issues.

  8. Ocean Science Literacy at the National Level • NSF COSEE Workshop and Workshop Report, 2000 • Discovering Earth’s Final Frontier: A US Strategy for Ocean Exploration, 2000 • Exploration of the Seas: Voyage into the Unknown, 2001 • Pew Commission Report, 2003 • US Commission on Ocean Policy Report, 2004 • US Ocean Action Plan, 2004 • Ocean Literacy Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts, 2005 • Conference on Ocean Literacy (CoOL), 2006 • Marine Technology Society Journal 39(4), 2006

  9. NOAA’s Education Policy “NOAA’s education program will improve the public’s understanding and appreciation of NOAA’s mission and of the natural environment resulting in an educated constituency that can make informed decisions and take appropriate actions.” “Every mission goal identified in the NOAA Strategic Plan will include an education component in its program plan.” Office of Education, Education Plan, and Education Council, Ocean Literacy Essential Principles and Fundamental Concepts

Scott Marine Education Center and Aquarium • Seattle Aquarium • SeaWorld San Diego • Shedd Aquarium • South Carolina Aquarium • Nauticus • New England Aquarium • OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center • Waikiki Aquarium

  17. Learning Ocean Science through Ocean Exploration Curriculum • Increased teachers’ sense of competency with regard to using the OE Web site and the curriculum; • Influenced teachers’ self-competency and assessment of their ability to teach physical and Earth ocean science; • Ocean science can be taught using the NSES and should be taught in US classrooms; and • Very positive about interaction with scientists at sea. (n = 337 participants, 17 workshops 16 statements, reverse coded)

  18. Inquiries Opportunities Reflection Communicate Professional Goals Increased Participation Principle Investigator Input 21 PI Surveys, n = 19 97 questions, 5 telephone interviews

  19. Principle Investigator Input Has conducting these activities lead to your reflection on your role as a scientist and the part you can play in enhancing ocean sciences literacy? 86% replied yes 21 PI Surveys, n = 19 97 questions, 5 telephone interviews

  20. Teleprescence Technologies NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer…increasing the pace, efficiency, and scope of exploration
