Read it aloud.) • What can be done to make one of the sentences more readable? • Share your changes with a partner. Record his/her changes, and evaluate those changes.

  2. Student Goals • Read “Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?” • Understand characterization. • Understand historical context and make connections to current events.

  3. QuickTalk: In the Vietnam War, many young American men were sent overseas to fight in a war they knew little about. Get together in a small group, and talk about how you think those soldiers might have felt. What do you think? How do life-threatening situations form who we are?

  4. Pre-Reading for “Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?” • Read the Literary Focus and Reading Focus on p. 129. • Read the Vocabulary on p. 129. • Read Build Background and Read with a Purpose on p. 131.

  5. During Reading:“Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?” • Read “Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?” • As you read answer the following questions: A, B, C, H, I, J, and K. • Put your answers in your Brown book above the vocabulary box on p. 23.

  6. After Reading:“Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?” • Complete the summary section in your Brown book. • Answer questions 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 (p. 139) on regular notebook paper. • Complete the vocabulary practice.
