  3. STARSS GALA Friends Food Fun 24 Participants at the STARSS Gala. Several agencies learned about helping their clients be a star Parent Link, Healthy Families, Family and Community Support Services, Family Literacy, GP Council for Lifelong Learning, Alberta Health, HIV North, Children’s Health Council, Headstart. Celbrate being the star that you are

  4. STARSS Groups Newly renovated space at the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre for child/parent interaction and childcare helped to support STARSS programming Healthy Environments for Children

  5. Enthusiasm for creating Smoke Free Environments for their children. Appreciated Ideas for doing different things to delay smoking around their children. Newsletters, handouts, journals, posters and incentives were most useful My Mom Is A STAR

  6. Starss at home STARSS THEN STARSS NOW • Started integrating into Healthy Families Home Visits. First year 6 Healthy Family clients; 4 quit smoking around children, 1 quit smoking during visits, 1 later quit smoking. • Note a reduced number of smoking families; introducing 1 on 1 when they come into the program. • Do one annual group series promoting STARSS

STARSS Alberta Training Phase 1 Phase 2 • 2008: STARSS Training to 55 projects with FNIHB and PHAC • Summer 2010: Promoting STARSS to 24 Community Agency personnel within Grande Prairie and surrounding area. • Fall 2010: 2 year followup with PHAC programs,present STARSS at AB Coalition Meeting

  8. Integrate STARSS into existing programming • Play up the star theme; see stars everywhere • Involve the children • Involve the extended family • Celebrate small success; focus on reducing smoking and not smoking around children • Continue to share ideas via the web page and newsletters; enthusiasm from other projects generates more enthusiasm!
