  3. In het verleden werden geisha's vaak (en in de regel ten onrechte) geassocieerd met prostitutie. Er bestond naast de wereld van de geisha's een wereld van courtisanes (Tayuu/Oira) waar prostitutie voorkwam. Hoewel toen het recht om de maagdelijkheid van een geisha te ontnemen kon worden gekocht, waren ze niet verplicht om seks te hebben met klanten, ook niet met degene die geld betaalde voor een maagdelijke geisha.
