  1. One of These Days By Gabriel Garcia Marquez

  2. Exposition • The story starts out with Aurelio Escovar arriving at his office with his eleven year old son. • It is Monday and warm and rainless. • Aurelio is a dentist, without a degree. • While Aurelio is polishing some false teeth, his son says that the town mayor has come to see him.

  3. Narrative Hook • The eleven year old boy shouts to his dad, “ The Mayor wants to know if you’ll pull his tooth.” • Aurelio tells the boy to say he is not here but the Mayor demands his tooth being pulled. • Aurelio still turned him down but then the Mayor threatened to shoot him if he did not.

  4. Rising Action • Aurelio finally agrees to pull his tooth after the threat. • The Mayor has an effected tooth that must be treated without anesthesia. • There is a great deal of discomfort in this scene noting that the two gentlemen do not like each other that much. • The men continue to talk uncomfortably.

  5. Climax • “The Mayor seized the arms of the chair, braced his feet with all his strength, and felt an icy void in his kidney, but did not make a sound.” • With a big yank the lower wisdom tooth is finally crushed out of the Mayor.

  6. Falling Action • After he yanked the tooth out Aurelio told the Mayor to dry his tears and went to wash his hands. • Aurelio told the Mayor to go to bed and gargle with salt water to feel better.

  7. Resolution • “The mayor stood up, said goodbye with a casual military salute, and walked toward the door, stretching his legs, without buttoning up his tunic.” • “Send the bill,” he said. • “To you or the town?” • The Mayor didn’t look at him. He closed the door and said through the screen: “It’s the same damn thing.” • This shows the arrogance of the Mayor but still from the kindness of his heart Aurelio still helped him

  8. Conflict • The conflict of the story is Man VS Man • It is between Aurelio, the dentist, and the Mayor of the town

  9. Characters • Aurelio Escovar, the dentist without a degree • The eleven year old boy, son of Aurelio, full of excitement. • The Mayor, arrogant and disrespectful. Has one side of his faced shaved, one side is swollen.
