  3. What is Health??? “ It’s the one class I guarantee you will use the rest of your life!” Miss Weber

  4. What is Health? • 2 minute brainstorm: write as many words that come to mind when you hear the word health (i.e. strong heart)

  5. Health=the combination of your physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being

  6. Physical Health=how well your body functions • This means your body has enough energy to perform daily activities, deal with everyday stress, and avoid injury.

  7. 5 steps to improve physical health • Eat nutritious meals and drink plenty of water everyday! • Engage in 30-60 minutes of physical activity everyday! • Practice good hygiene-bathe daily, brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day, and wash hands regularly. • Avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs (even prescription drugs too!) • Sleep 8-10 hours per night

  8. Mental/Emotional Health deals with your feelings and your thoughts

  9. Mental/Emotional Health • Reflects how you feel about yourself • How you cope with problems • How you meet life demands everyday

Mentally/emotionallyHealthy People: • Accept responsibility for their actions • Make responsible decisions • Sense of control over their lives • Express emotions in appropriate ways • Enjoy challenges that help them grow • Deal with life’s stresses & frustrations positively • Optimistic (have positive outlook)

  11. SOCIAL HEALTH= how you interact with others • Seeks out and enjoys the company of others • Strong character traits: respect, responsibility, fairness, trustworthiness, citizenship, and caring • Excellent communicator & listens well to others

  12. Identifying Activity • Go back to your list of words that remind you of health. • Write a “P” next to a word that has to do with physical health • Write a “M” next to a word that has to do with mental/emotional health • Write a “S” next to a word that has to do with social health

  13. Wellness v. Health • Wellness= an overall state of well-being or Total Health • Wellness is an ongoing process of maintaining balance in all health areas.

  14. Wellness- 7 dimensions • Physical • Intellectual • Emotional • Environmental • Social • Spiritual • Occupational

  15. What are you doing to improve your health??? • Who is this crazy woman??? • Triathlons challenge your physical (cardiovascular endurance/muscular endurance), mental (positive thinking & believing in self), and emotional (roller coaster of emotions) health • What do you want to accomplish this semester?

  16. Self-Health plan • For the next 5 months, you will pick one area of health that you want to improve on, create 1 overall goal, and design a plan to achieve improvements.
