  3. Sources of Industry Partners • Conferences and seminars • Personal contacts via former graduate students, colleagues in industry • Contact through your publications • Company representative visits to campus • Networking

  4. Grant Planning with Industry • Discuss project details with your scientific contact to ensure alignment of goals • Can take 1-3 months to get company approval for proposal  Start early and understand the company’s needs

  5. Keys to Successful Collaborations • Understand the Company’s goals and objectives • Keep industry partner informed of progress • Especially when things are not going as planned  Communicate and build trust for a long-term relationship

  6. Research Contracts Logistics • Work plan and budget – to be reviewed and approved by Chair, Dean and MILO • Indirect Cost Rate is 40% • Typically, University retains ownership of IP (with right of first offer to the company) and unrestricted right to publish • Negotiations with the company can take 1-2 months

  7. What MILO does • Negotiates industry sponsored research contracts and supports industry matching government grants • Processes non-monetary agreements (e.g. Material Transfer Agreements and Non-Disclosure Agreements) • Coordinates visits from industry to campus to meet with researchers • Facilitates commercialization of research developed at the university
