  1. DO NOW:Make a list of things you know that move or grow very slowly

  2. How fast do they grow? • Snail: 6 cm per minute • Tree Growth: 100 cm – 1000 cm per year (up to 18 feet per year) • Hair: 1.25 cms per month • Fingernails: 2.3 cms per year (23 millimeters) • Staglagtites: 10 cms per 1000 years • TECTONIC PLATES: 2.5 cms – 15 cms per year

  3. Plate Boundaries

  4. 3 Types of Plate Boundaries • No plate can budge without affecting the other plates surrounding it. • As the plates move, they collide pull apart, or grind past each other producing changes in the Earth’s surface.

  5. Divergent Boundary • A divergent boundary occurs when two plates are moving apart • Magma rises to fill the gap

  6. Rift Valleys and Mid-Ocean Ridges Eventually, Rift Valleys become Mid-Ocean Ridges

  7. Convergent Boundaries • A convergent boundary occurs when two plates collide (run into each other)

  8. Convergent Boundaries • The place where two plate boundaries come together or converge is called a convergent boundary • A collision is when two plates hit each other—the density of the crust determines which plate goes under the other one

  9. Transform Boundary • A transform boundary occurs when two plates slide past each other

  10. Exit slip • 1) Diverging a) Slding past each other • 2) Transform b) Coming together • 3) Convergent c) moving apart
