Old Requirements - Child Nutrition Act -2004 New Requirements – Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act Law 2010 All 2004 members – plus Physical education teachers, school and local health officials and community partners Public Involvement • Parents, students, nutrition representatives, school board and administrators

Old Requirements - Child Nutrition Act -2004 New Requirements – Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act Law 2010 2004 requirements – plus Stakeholders and participates are involved in the implementation, periodic review and update of the LWP. Stakeholder Involvement • Stakeholders and participants are required to participate in the development of the LWP.

Old Requirements - Child Nutrition Act -2004 New Requirements – Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act Law 2010 Same as 2004 requirements Local Discretion • Districts can determine the specific policies appropriate for schools under their jurisdiction, provided that those policies include all required elements specified in the Act.

Local Designation • Establish a plan for measuring and implementing the LWP • One or more persons within the District or school charged with ensuring that the school meets the LWP

Goal # 1Nutrition Education Primary Goal: Influence student eating behaviors Build nutrition knowledge and skills to help students make healthy choices Provide nutrition education that is age appropriate and culturally diverse Integrate nutrition education math and reading Provide opportunities for students to have fun Choose nutrition education curriculum that is easy to teach and foster lifelong healthy eating

Goal # 2Physical Activity Primary Goal for Schools: Provide an opportunity for every student to develop the knowledge and skills for a specific physical activity Maintain a students’ physical fitness Ensure students’ regular participation in physical activity Teach students the short and long benefits of physical activity and healthful lifestyle

  18. Goal # 3Other School-Based Activities  Primary Goal: • Create a total school environment that is conducive to healthy eating and being physically active. To include: • Dining Environment • Time to Eat • Food or Physical Activity as a Reward or Punishment • Consistent School Activities and Environment

Goal # 4Nutrition Guidelines Primary Goal for All Food and Beverages Available on School Campuses During the School Day: • Lifelong eating habits are influenced by the type of foods and beverages available in their daily environment • Ensure that reimbursable school meals meet program requirements and nutrition standards • School District must establish standards and guidelines to address all foods and beverages sold and served to students, including those available outside the school meal programs. Examples: Vending, concessions, fundraisers and classroom parties.

Goal# 5Measuring, Implementation and Public Notification Primary Goal: Maintain, Measure and Evaluate the Effort • Establish a plan for measuring implementation of the LWP • Periodic assessments to determine how well the policy is being managed and enforced • Reinforce LWP goal with staff if necessary • Be prepared to update and amend the LWP as the process moves on

Goal # 6Local Designation Primary Goal: • Designate one or more persons with operational responsibility for ensuring that the district and schools are meeting the LWP • Train designees on LWP rules and regulations • Meet periodically to determine if the LWP is active throughout the school district and effective

Group Activity Team Leaders: • Review CCPS 2006 LWP • Review the Sample Policy Language (Goals #5 and #6 limited information) Guidance Available - Fall 2012 • Determine what specific policies are appropriate for the CCPS jurisdiction, provided that those policies address all of the required elements specified in the CN and HHFK Acts. • Collaborate with team members to draft out the specific policies for CCPS. Take draft and return at next meeting • Compare CCPS current LWP to other District’s LWP to gain ideas

Next Meeting • Wednesday October 19,2011 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. • Review and conduct open discussions of each team’s draft of their LWP goal • Conduct an open rewrite to ensure all groups agree • At the lasting meeting, conduct another review and finalize LWP for first read by CCPS’s Administrative Cabinet
