    2. Evaluation - What do we aim to achieve? Improve the evidence base for strategy development, review and decision making - Measures of quality, novelty, and volume of output - Feedback from users/beneficiaries of research Demonstrate the benefits to society, and the economy, from MRC investments in research and training (impacts) MRC should be innovative in sponsoring the development of evaluation methods Evaluation will support normal research programme management, cross research council and partnership working

    3. MRC Outputs Data Gathering Tool (ODGT) For collection of outputs, outcomes and impacts Researchers expected to provide a response to the ODGT include intramural and extramural researchers that currently hold MRC funding Researchers that held a grant which terminated in 2006, 2007 or 2008 are also invited to provide an ODGT return The ODGT is split into two sections: Section A is targeted at specific grants, fellowships or programmes. Researchers that hold/have held multiple grants over this period will complete this section for each grant held. Section B captures outcomes/impacts from all MRC-funded research undertaken, and will be completed once by each researcher.

    4. Support for respondents Detailed guidance notes, and FAQs available at http://www.mrc.ac.uk/OurResearch/Impact/ODGT/index.htm Online help text administered on every screen providing detailed information on each question. Any queries should be directed to evaluation@headoffice.mrc.ac.uk

    5. How can Research Support Offices/Technology Transfer Offices help? MRC wishes to work with research organisations to collect high quality feedback from the researchers it supports MRC will keep research organisations informed regarding compliance MRC will return the data it collects back to research organisations MRC will apply sanctions on an individual basis for researchers not complying
