  1. 10.Search and Rescue -1 Search and Rescue (SAR) in the Shannon FIR is the function of the Shannon Rescue Co-ordination Centre (SRCC), but an emergency in the Dublin Control Area (CTA) is coordinated by a local Sub-Centre there. • Emergency R/T frequencies are: 121.5 & 243 MHz 500 & 2182 kHz Distress and Urgency signals Distress is defined as an aircraft or its occupants requiring immediate assistance. People on the ground may be alerted to this by: • Transmission of the word “MAYDAY” • Transmission of the group “SOS” either directly or by Morse Code (… ---…) • Firing red rockets of Verey lights • Firing a red parachute flare Urgency means EITHER an aircraft compelled to land but not in immediate danger:- • Shown by switching the landing lights on/off repeatedly or • Switching navigation lights on/off repeatedly

  2. 10.Search and Rescue -2 OR an aircraft that has observed a plane or person in distress:- Transmitting “PAN,PAN” by R/T (to ATC or RCC) Transmitting the group “XXX” by any method (in Morse it is _.._ _.._ _.._) Then transmit the following information:- • Identification, type of craft in distress and condition • Position as grid reference or as a bearing from a ground feature or navaid • Time of observation (Zulu) • Number of people visible • Whether people are on the craft or not • If craft is in the water, number of people aboard • Physical condition of survivors Then standby for instructions from ATC or RCC Coordinate any other aircraft until the arrival of a SAR aircraft

  3. 10.Search and Rescue - 3 On intercepting a Distress call, a pilot should:- • Record position of craft in distress if given – take a bearing if possible • Relay as much information as possible to ATC • Proceed to the position of the distress signal if feasible. Search and Rescue is best carried out by trained professionals, but a pilot may encounter ground signals from the survivors of an accident, or may need to alert SAR if he/she is a survivor after an emergency landing: V Require assistance X Require medical assistance These letters should be at least 2.5m high, with fires, smoke, flares etc. to draw attention to them

  4. 10.Search and Rescue - 4 There are other signals as well, for instance to/from ships or ground search parties, but these are not relevant to GA pilots whose only role is to report urgency sightings and stay in touch with a distress situation until an SAR unit arrives.
