  2. Modern vs. “contemporary” Art • Modern Art is NOT the same as contemporary art. • Modern Art is a period of art movements that started during the time of the industrial revolution. • Contemporary art is generally accepted as art movement created from the 1970’s to current day.

  3. Impressionism - “A Revolution in Art” • Originated in France. • Art of the time focused on producing realistic paintings of classical subjects - in the style of the Renaissance masters. • Edouard Manet - “The Father of Impressionism” • First to break away from the accepted style of painting • Painted modern life • Painted less realistically - showed brushstrokes on purpose • Claude Monet • Famous for late-career waterlily paintings • Used color instead of black or grey to create shadows • Painted nature, gardens, and scenes of everyday life • Edgar Degas • Used photographs to capture ballet dancers, then painted the scenes • Paul Cezanne (post-impressionist painter) • Inspired famous modern artists Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso • Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot - female impressionist painters • Vincent Van Gogh • Colorful, textured paintings with thick brushstrokes and unmixed paints
