  2. What is a Smart Phone? • Mobile phone including functions of a PC • Often called feature phones • Has a QWERTY keyboard • Have basic PIM (personal information management) software built in • i.e Calendar, Address Book, to-do list

  3. Brief History of Smart Phones • Been around since 1993 • First smart phone is known as Simon • Created by IBM • Contained some PIM features Simon SmartPhone

  4. Smart Phones Today Has wireless connectivity Ability to access the Internet without the need of a computer Able to retrieve news, sport scores, weather & etc. with a data plan Wi-Fi Able to receive e-mails Bluetooth Better camera with flash function

  5. Smart Phones Today… continued • GPS (global positioning system) capability • Can open Microsoft Office documents • The OS and memory limits the programs that are allowed to run • Text messaging • Bigger screen and/or touch screen • Can be used as a music device HTC Fuze

  6. Price Differences Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, marked for less than $300 Today, some SmartPhones are marked for $600 and over SmartPhone Brands: Blackberry, iPhone, HTC, Nokia & more

  7. Future SmartPhones Able to run like a computer & look like a phone Easier to use than the one’s we have today Enhancement in VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) More comfortable to work on

  8. What now? • Development of SmartPhones have been revolutionized • Industry of SmartPhones will continue to develop over time • Will increase the challenges presented by mobile phone applications • Growth rate of SmartPhones was 70% in 2006 • Shipments of units will be in the hundred-millions

  9. What now? … continued Higher penetration rates in other parts of the world Will determine future trends of global smartphone market
