Outgrowth: Middle School STEM Partnership • Arnold Science Magnet Academy, Richards Middle School, Rothschild Middle School, and Aaron Cohn Middle School in order to develop programs at the middle school level that engage students in STEM. • July 2016, STEM faculty from CSU in the areas of UTeach Columbus, Earth and Space Science; Counseling, Foundations, and Leadership; and the TSYS School of Computer Science have met with principals from Arnold Science Magnet Academy, Richards Middle School, Rothschild Middle School, and Aaron Cohn Middle School in order to develop programs at the middle school level that engage students in STEM.

  4. Rothschild Middle School Leadership Academy • NSA grant to provide cybersecurity instruction at a Muscogee County School District middle school • Students from Rothschild participated in high level NSA presentation on CSU campus

  6. Rothschild Game Plan • Developing a course on cybersecurity education specifically designed for 7th and 8th grade middle school students. • The course will be structured on the National Security Agency (NSA) Cybersecurity First Principles

  9. Columbus State Hosts Two STEM Camps 2017 • Summer Camp for Middle School Students in broad field STEM • New Summer Camp funded by NSA Grant

Broad Field STEM Camp • A third initiative focused on middle school students leverages Noyce Grant and CSU donor funding • Dr. Kimberly Shaw and Dr. Tim Howard have developed a series of summer camps focused on bringing middle school students from the Muscogee County School District and other middle school students to the CSU campus for week long intensive STEM camps that have proven to be successful in the past

  12. NSA Summer Camp • Funded by NSA Grant • Focused on the National Security Agency (NSA) Cybersecurity First Principles • Transportation to CSU campus funded for high needs students • Week of June 19

  13. UTeach Columbus: 5E Inquiry • UTeach Columbus has also hosted workshops this year for science teachers in Muscogee County, and in Chattahoochee County on 5E inquiry lessons. • Engage • Explore • Explain • Elaborate • Evaluate

Engage: generating curiosity, asking open ended questions, learning what students already know • Explore: give students time to work together; listen to student ideas, support without giving answers yet • Explain: Encourage students to explain concepts in their own words, teacher highlights important ideas • Elaborate: ask students to apply content in a new situation or test added ideas • Evaluate: ask questions that provide insight, distribute questions so that all are accountable

  15. The Path Forward • Capitalizing on relationships with Muscogee County School District and Chattahoochee County School District • Provide support for robotics programs at Aaron Cohn Middle School • Faculty course redevelopment mini-grants
