  1. ENERGY STAR®SALES ASSOCIATE TRAINING Dehumidifiers (Updated: September 2010)

  2. ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program that helps consumers identify energy-efficient products. ENERGY STAR qualified products: Save energy Save money Save the environment What is ENERGY STAR?

  3. About ENERGY STAR The ENERGY STAR mark ranks among the highest level of influence on product purchase among all consumer emblems, similar in ranking to the Good Housekeeping Seal.

  4. ENERGY STAR Sales Value • In 2009 alone, Americans—with the help of ENERGY STAR—saved $17 billion on their energy bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to the annual emissions of 30 million vehicles. • Consumer awareness and desire for efficiency savings is high • In 2009, more than 75% of households nationwide recognized the ENERGY STAR label • Of households that purchased ENERGY STAR products in the past year: • 80% of them reported the label as influential to their purchasing decision • More than 90% of them reported they are likely to recommend ENERGY STAR products to friends Source: 1) EPA Office of Air and Radiation, Climate Protection Partnerships Division. 5. ENERGY STAR Qualified Dehumidifiers Overview ENERGY STAR The government-backed program dedicated to helping consumers save money and protect the environment through superior energy efficiency. Look for the ENERGY STAR label on qualified dehumidifiers. ENERGY STAR qualified room dehumidifiers: • Use about 15% less energy than conventional units, but remove the same amount of moisture • Save consumers $220 over the lifetime of the unit, on average* • Feature more efficient refrigeration coils, compressors, and fans than conventional models • Help prevent climate change by reducing the greenhouse gas emissions caused by burning fossil fuels at power plants. • d Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR Program *Savings will vary depending upon equipment usage.

  6. ENERGY STAR QualifiedDehumidifier Criteria • The energy efficiency of a dehumidifier is measured by its Energy Factor, which is the liters (L) of water removed per kilowatt hour (kWh) of energy consumed. In general, a higher Energy Factor, means a more efficient dehumidifier. • ENERGY STAR qualified units have an Energy Factor ranging from 1.20 to 1.80 (L/kWh) for standard capacity units and more than 2.50 (L/kWh) for higher capacity units. • Qualified dehumidifiers use 15% less energy than similarly-sized standard models, but remove the same amount of moisture. They have more efficient refrigeration coils, compressors, and fans than standard models.

  7. The average dehumidifier that has earned the ENERGY STAR can save consumers about $20 per year. Over the life of the unit, that’s more than $220 in savings! The typical household spends more than $2,200 a year on energy bills. With ENERGY STAR, consumers can save over one-third this amount or about $700. ENERGY STAR qualified products use less energy and cost less to operate resulting in: Saving Energy = Saving Money Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR Program

  8. Did you know? The energy used in the average house can cause about two times as many greenhouse gas emissions as the average car By using less energy, qualified dehumidifiers reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by burning fossil fuels at power plants Saving Energy HelpsProtect the Environment Source: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR Program

  9. High quality performance More efficient moisture removal by dehumidifiers that have earned the ENERGY STAR can make a room feel cooler in the summer months and less clammy in the winter months. Save money without sacrifice A typical dehumidifier that has earned the ENERGY STAR removes the same amount of moisture as a similarly-sized conventional unit, but uses about 15 % less energy The annual energy saved by a dehumidifier that has earned the ENERGY STAR could power an ENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator for 5 months!  Why Buy ENERGY STAR? 10. Other Factors to Consider In addition to energy efficiency, there are many important operating features for customers to consider when purchasing a dehumidifier: • Room size and moisture conditions– Choose a dehumidifier for a room’s moisture conditions, ranging from moderately damp to extremely wet. • Water removal options– Most dehumidifiers have a removable bucket to collect water, which will need to be emptied. Most also have a hose option, so the water can be directed into a floor drain. • Placement– Most dehumidifiers have top-mounted air discharge and can be placed against walls. Models without a top-mounted air discharge need to be located away from walls and furniture, so that air can circulate freely around the unit. • Operating temperature– If the dehumidifier will be operating in temperatures below 65 degrees, consider a model specifically designed for lower temperatures.
