  1. Biology: The study of life What makes something a living thing? Canislupisfamiliaris.

  2. Why is one living and the other is not?

  3. Cells/Organization Cell-Smallest unit capable of all life functions • Unicellular- one cell ex. Bacteria • Multicellular- organism made of many cells

  4. DNA/Heredity • Deoxyribonucleic acid- carries the code for all organisms

  5. What has DNA in the photo?

  6. Reproduction Asexual reproduction- involves a single parent Sexual reproduction – involves two parents Is it essential for an individual to reproduce?

  7. Capybara

  8. Grow and Develop Organisms growas they produce MORE CELLS Organisms develop as they mature into adult organisms

  9. Obtain and use Energy Metabolism = the total of all chemical reactions in an organism Why do organisms need energy? How do organisms obtain energy?

  10. Respond to Stimulus Stimulus- anything that causes an organism to react • Light • Temperature • Odor • Sound • Pressure • Gravity • Heat • Water

  11. Evolution/Adaptation • Evolution- Groups of Organisms (not individuals) will change over time in order to survive with changing environments • Adaptation- characteristics that improves organisms ability to survive and reproduce

  12. Homeostasis Homeostasis- the ability of an organism to maintain its internal environment despite conditions in the external environment. Human body temperature is……… • if body temperature rises, you sweat. • if body temperature lowers, you shiver.

  13. Limited Life Span Giant tortoise- life span = 150 years

  14. "It's older than the great pyramids, older than Stonehenge” 4,770-year-old "Methuselah" bristle-cone pine. "When Christ walked the earth it was already 2,700 years old." California, USA

  15. Mayfly – life span = one day!

  16. A Lesson in the Art of Enjoying Life! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFnAdeaoG74

  17. Alive or Not?

  18. Is a virus living?

  19. All Living things share these characteristics. 1. Made up of one or more cells2. Have DNA3. Can Reproduce4. Grow and develop5. Obtain and use energy6. Respond to their environment 7. Can change over time(evolve)8. Maintain Stable Internal Environment (Homeostasis) 9.Limited life span
