  1. Kite Runner By: Khaled Hosseini Daniel Romero

  2. Societal Issues Racism and Racial Tensions • Some Afghans don’t want Afghanistan for the native Pashtuns “Afghanistan is the land of Pashtuns. It always has been, always will be. We’re the true Afghans, the pure Afghans, not this Flat Nose here.” Daniel Romero

  3. The native Pashtuns want to kill all Hazaras still in Afghanistan. “I had read about the Hazara massacre in Mazari-i-Sharif in the papers.” “Door-to-door we only rested for food and prayer,” the Talib said. He said fondly, like a man telling of a great party he’d attended “We left the bodies in the streets, and if their families tried to sneak out to drag them back into their homes, we’d shoot them too.” Daniel Romero

  4. Social Class • You’re looked down upon if you socialize with a Hazara. “In fact you bother me more than this Hazara here. How can you talk to him, play with him, let him touch you?” • Hazaras are forced to be the Pashtuns slaves. “You had servants probably Hazaras” “Lucky Hazara having such a concerned master. His father should dust the floor with his eye lashes.” Daniel Romero

  5. Pashtuns are not supposed to marry and have a family with a Hazara. Since Ali was infertile Baba had a child with Sanauber for Ali. But Baba could never tell anyone that the child was his own. • Change from wealthy upper class to a lower class immigrant When Baba and Amir moved to America they were just another immigrant. Baba worked at a gas station and they lived in a ratty apartment. Daniel Romero

  6. Setting Life in Afghanistan • The beginning takes place in the beautiful and peaceful capital city of Kabul in Eastern Afghanistan. • Amir lives in a three story house in the Wazir Akbar Khan district. • Their house is surrounded by a fence and they have beautiful gardens and a big back yard. • They have all the latest things because Baba is a very successful business owner. • Amir is the son of the richest man in Kabul and gets exempted from certain aspects of life like bullying and school punishment because of it. Daniel Romero

  7. Life in America • They live in a small old apartment in San Francisco. • Baba has to work at a gas station pumping gas. • They have to sell used junk at the flea market to make ends meet. • They’re just another immigrant from Afghanistan. Daniel Romero

  8. Themes Redemption: • Throughout the book Baba is trying to redeem himself for not telling Hassan that he is his child. He fixes his cleft lip, takes Hassan on trips to other towns. “I think that everything he did, feeding the poor, giving money to friends in need, it was all a way of redeeming himself. And that, I believe, is what true redemption is, Amir jan, when guilt leads to good.” Daniel Romero

  9. Towards the end of the book Amir is trying to redeem himself for not helping Hassan. Amir goes back to Afghanistan to rescue his half brother’s son, his nephew. He risks his life to bring him back to America and raise him. • Amir makes the final step of redemption by over coming his fear by rescuing Hassan’s son Sohrab. This act of honor and courage finally makes Amir his father’s son. Daniel Romero

  10. Class Structure • Amir disagrees with the classification of Hazara and Pashtun “And one more thing, General Sahib”…”You will never again refer to him as ‘Hazara boy’ in my presence. He has a name and it’s Sohrab.” • His time with Farid and his family helps him get a better feel for what it’s truly like to be an Afghan. • There is a division of Hazara and Pashtuns through jobs, way of life, and living conditions Daniel Romero

  11. Man’s Cruelty • The Taliban would kill anyone who was a Hazara whether man, woman, or child • Taliban shoot Hassan and his wife in front of their son Sohrab for no reason • Assef beat a kid up with brass knuckles just because he stood up to him • Assef stoned the two people at the Soccer stadium to death. Daniel Romero

  12. Loyalty to Others • Hassan still wanted to be friends with Amir even though he didn’t help him in the alley • Even though Amir lied, taunted, and teased Hassan he still wanted to be his friend • Amir would not give up on Hassan even after months of silence • Soraya didn’t think about leaving Amir after all the time he had been gone in Afghanistan Daniel Romero

  13. Characterization Amir • Start out as the son of a successful entrepreneur • Receives everything he wants, but not the thing he wants the most • Others, mostly Baba, fight his battles for him • When his father and him live in America they’re just another immigrant Daniel Romero

  14. He still gets what he wants from his father: a car, college, and approval to marry Soraya • Amir has to fight his own battles now and go find Sohrab • He has to go it alone and fight Assef, his old bully, for Sohrab without any help • He ends up making the last big step towards becoming the man his father was raising him to be by deciding to raise Sohrab by himself Daniel Romero

  15. Round • He expresses all feelings; sorrow, joy, disappointment, love, contempt, and rejection. In the beginning he is a coward, but by the end he changes into a loving and courageous father. Dynamic • In the beginning Amir is very self centered and self conscious. He is a coward and others have to fight his battles • In the end Hassan becomes the father figure that Sohrab needs and that his father wanted him to become. He no longer believes in the whole Hazara verses Pashtuns and has started to stick up for himself Daniel Romero

  16. Hassan • Begins as a loyal, and naive friend • Believes everything Amir tells him because he doesn’t know any better • He would do anything for Hassan • Once he leaves he becomes more educated and realizes what Amir was doing to him • He still loves Amir and Baba enough to take care of their house until he died Daniel Romero

  17. Flat • Only shows his love, and respect for Amir and his father. He never shows signs of hate even when Amir betrayed him or when others made fun of him. Static • Hassan’s loyalty to Amir never wavers even after the incident in the alley • Until his death he is still Amir’s servant Daniel Romero

  18. Baba • Loving and caring of his son Amir and his servants son Hassan • Very social, he throws parties every week • Richest man in Kabul, this makes him well known to others • Disappointed in his son, Amir isn’t much like him. He is a coward and not athletic but he loves him all the same Daniel Romero

  19. On the way to America we see his bad side when he tries to strangle their driver • He shows his courage when he defends the woman from the Russian soldier • When they move to America Baba isn’t the same; he’s not as happy and he has lost some of his enthusiasm • He starts to accept his son and begins to look upon him with more pride Daniel Romero

  20. Round • At first Baba shows us that he is hard working, caring, and thoughtful of others. • When they have to leave Kabul we see his courage and his vengefulness • In America Baba becomes very humble and somber Static • His habits never change, he still drinks and likes to socialize with fellow Afghans • His values never change, he still believes lying is the worst thing you can do • His attitude never changes, he still doesn't believe in God and he still doesn’t like the fact that Amir wants to become a writer Daniel Romero

  21. Assef • In the beginning he is a radical Pashtun with bad intentions • He is unmerciful to any who go against him • He despises the Hazara and wants them all dead • When we see him later on in the book he is still the same he hates Amir and all Hazaras but now he is doing something about it Daniel Romero

  22. Flat • He only shows his malice, prejudice, and disgust of all Hazaras throughout the entire book. He doesn’t do anything other than torture and later on kill Hazaras. Static • Assef never gets over his hate of Hazaras and he is still a sociopath Daniel Romero

  23. Home to the Taliban Most dangerous place in the world for a child to be born The US and Afghan militias are combating the Taliban Has recently become a republic Lead by President Hamid Karzai Afghanistan Today Daniel Romero
