PIL- OBJECTIVES • reflect critically on the nature of lawyers’ ethical and professional responsibilities in public interest law practice; • evaluate critically theories and models of legal service delivery; • Identify and develop strategies to respond to and to address legal issues in a public interest context; and • advocate effectively in the public interest

  5. PIL - LESSONS • 8 HRS LESSONS ON – • Nature and core values of public interest issues • Ethical and Professional Responsibilities of Public Interest Lawyers; • Public Interest Law Organizations • Public Interest Lawyering Strategies

  6. Executing Social Justice/PIL Projects • Lesson 5 PIL- Private Group Work to harmonise the proposals written during Social Justice Lessons • Lesson 6- Groups Present Plans and strategies for executing these projects • 6 wks of 500 Level 1st semester & 12 wks 2nd semester 500 level- Projects. • final reports (or interim reports) (and reflections) presented before the entire class.

  7. PRISON PROJECT- OBJECTIVES • Develop the skills of law students to complement official legal aid with free legal services to Prisoners and detainees • Promote students commitment to public interest lawyering and community service

  8. PRISON CLINIC THEMATIC FOCUS • Prisoners welfare • Prisoners human rights education- rights and responsibilities • Prisoners General education and career development • Data verification and collection • Women Prisoners • Juveniles • Prison Decongestion • Pretrial Detainees

ROLE OF STUDENTS IN A PRE-TRIAL DETAINEE LAW CLINIC • Interviewing/Counselling • Categorization/Classification of Detainees • Jail delivery advocacy • Detainee welfare • Orientation and assistance to freed detainee • Contacting Family, Lawyer, Medical personnel • Representations/Petitions before criminal justice personnel and Government organs • Mediation • Bail Processing/Assistance • Ascertain legal and other needs • Monitor the detainee court case

  12. THE NEED • We must not deploy our students to justice projects for the sake. • We must identify a need • Consider the environment • Remember that our students are not guinea pigs • Build on your strength
