  2. Federal Level Mexico is a federal republic based on the constitution that was established in 1917. It is divided into three levels:state union, municipal, and federal union. legislative, executive, and judicial.

  3. State and Local Level Mexico is made up of 31 states that are led by a governor. The states are further divided in municipalities which are led by a mayor. Each state is considered it’s own entity and is free to make it’s own constitution.

  4. Legislative Branch The legislative branch is bicameral. The chamber of senators, the upper house, has 128 senators, and the chamber of deputies, the lower house, currently has 500 representatives. Some roles of the legislative branch include passing laws, approving bills, and declaring war.

  5. Political Parties There are many political parties, but only three have major dominance: PAN, PRI, and PRD.

  6. PAN National Action Party Founded in 1939. Formally, the party is independent of rightist or leftist views, considering both equally, but recently it has taken a conservative stance and is influenced by Christianity.

  7. PRI Institutional Revolutionary Party Founded in 1929 as the National Revolutionary Party. The party received its present name in 1946. Overall, the party is considered independent, as members lean toward both the right and the left.

  8. PRD Party of the Democratic Revolution Founded in 1989 as the National Democratic Front and came into origin from a split with the PRI. The party takes a left-wing view.

  9. Judicial Branch The judicial branch consists of a high court, the Supreme Court of Justice of the nation, and other smaller courts such as district courts. The Supreme Court is composed of 11 member which are appointed by the president and approved by the senate.

  10. Executive Branch The president is head of the executive branch. The president is elected by popular vote and can only serve one six-year term (sexeno). The president is also the commander in chief and appoints members of the cabinet.

  11. Independence and Revolution The Aztec empire inhabited the area now known as Mexico. It was conquered in 1519 by the Spanish under Hernando Cortes. The Mexicans revolted in 1810 and won independence in 1821. Mexico’s government was weak in it’s early days so Europeans countries and the US sought to exert control over the government.

  12. 19th century In 1871, a mestizo named Porfirio Diaz ran against Juarez for president and was defeated. He decided to overthrow the government which he did 5 years later. Diaz ruled with an iron fist for 40 years.

  13. 20th Century After a brief civil war in 1920, Mexico enjoyed agricultural, political and social reforms but power was unevenly distributed and was mostly held by the elite. This caused many rebellions, migration, and organized crime.

  14. Modern Times In the last 30 years Mexico’s economy has heavily fluctuated, a plethora of central Americans have immigrated, and there has been much corruption. This can largely be due to illicit drug trade. NAFTA has provided hope for most but has caused rebellion from guerrillas in chiapas.
