  2. History • Is a French novel by Gaston Leroux. • Originally named Le Fantôme de l'Opéra • It was first published in September 23, 1909 to January 8, 1910. • The novel was translated into English in 1911.

  4. Phantom • He falls in love with Christine. • Lived underneath the Paris Opera House. • Gives Christine voice lessons through the wall of her room and leads her to believe he is the spirit of her deceased father. • Played by Gerard Butler.

  5. Christine Daae • Is an orphaned dancer at the Paris Opera House. • Taken to the Paris Opera House where she lived and trained as a ballerina. • Falls in love with Raoul, Vicount de Changy • Played by Emmy Rossum

  6. Raoul, Viscount de Changy • Childhood sweetheartof Christine. • Soon realizes that Christine is under the sway of another man. • Wants to bring Christine back into his life • Played by Patrick Wilson

  10. Carlotta • The spoiled prima donna. • Is irritated by the Phantom and decides to leave, but comes back to sing. • Played by Minnie Driver.

Synopsis • In the opening scene there is an auction being held at the Opera Popularie in Paris in 1919. • Due to the mysterious 'Opera Ghost' who seems determined to have the screeching diva leave. • Andre and Firmin are strong-minded to find a new leading lady, Christine Daae. • The Phantom falls in love with the chorus singer Christine. • Christine unmasks the Phantom in front of the audience so he kidnapps her and releases the immense chandelier onto the audience.

  12. Synopsis (cont.) • She kisses the Phantom and he lets her go with Raoul. • Then escapes through his tunnels away from the people tracking him down for murder. • The end scene shows the old vicomte putting the monkey music box on Christine's, his wife's, grave.
