  1. presented March 5th, 2016 Michigan Section Digital Radio GroupAnnual ReportBy: Jay Nugent WB8TKLWB8TKL@ARRL.NET

  2. Areas we will cover: • Digital Technology “stuff” • What the Michigan AMPRnet once was • What the Michigan AMPRnet is now • What the Michigan AMPRnet needs to accomplish • How will we get there? • Goals for 2016

  3. Digital Technology “stuff”Various Domain Names • MI-DRG.ORG – Paid for by WB8TKL (May) • MI-ARRL.ORG – Renewed by WB8TKL (3/1) • SectionOuting.Info – Paid for by WB8RCR • MIARRLPRB1.ORG – Needed any longer? (comes up for automatic renewal in July) • “NEW AND IMPROVED” mi-drg.org website (now AMPRnet and JNOS centric, only)

  4. What the Michigan AMPRnet once was:

  5. What the Michigan AMPRnet oncewas (cir. 2008-12) • Hamgates act as the “default gateway” to the AMPRnet for a county(ies) end users • HamGates allow disperse portions of the state network to be interlinked via the Internet as well as through RF links using the TCP/IP protocols. • 70% of L.P. had an RF footprint • With 22 HG and Key Stations (EOC's, RedX, Staff) Email and CONVerse traffic flowed daily • Multiple CONVerse nets weekly • DRG Reps met Quarterly • Held “Packet Training” sessions periodically

  6. So What Happened??????? • High cost of gas (was difficult getting attendance at meetings) • Jay was $poor$ due to a lack of consulting gigs • Jay was no longer doing ALL the work (encap updates, FW problems, etc.) • Divorces, strokes, people moving away, loss of STATIC addresses, and/or having other interests • General lack of excitement within the ranks when they were no longer getting pumped up by the Cheer Leading and Dog & Pony shows • Lack of “sustainable” traffic to keep SysOps willing to keep their nodes up ($$$ vs Benefits) • PORTAL.AMPR.ORG was introduced and broke the system!!! We could no longer get Hostname/DNS entries for stations and updating ENCAP was nearly impossible for quite some time. • SO THE PENDULUM HAS SWUNG...YET AGAIN.

  7. What the Michigan AMPRnet is now:

  8. What the Michigan AMPRnet is now (cir. 2016) • Hamgate.Washtenaw --- Operational • Detroit.AMPR.org --- Operational • Hamgate.Eaton --- Unreachable (Rpi) (FW issues?) • Hamgate.Midland – “RCR: we have an issue with hg.mid” • Hamgate.Ottawa --- “Inbound” Firewall issues • Hamgate.Alcona --- Hard drive failure • Emmett/Char/Cheboy --- (unknown/unreachable) • UNDER CONSTRUCTION: Hamgate.Kent, Hamgate.LaPeer, SEOC • FUTURE PLANNED: Hamgate.Monroe, Hamgate.Kalamazoo, Hamgate.AnnArbor (WiFi)

  9. Only 15 subnets, 9 Hamgates in ENCAP, and only 4 Hamgates are online (of sorts) route addprivate 44.102.168/24 encap 216.245.225.3 Hamgate.Antrim Antrim (not in service) route addprivate 44.102.166/24 encap 216.245.225.3 Hamgate.Antrim Kalkaska (not in service) route addprivate 44.102.170/23 encap 96.36.5.237 Emm/Char/Cheb ???? route addprivate 44.102.216/23 encap 96.36.5.237 Emm/Char/Cheb ???? route addprivate 44.102.132/24 encap 97.84.0.85 Hamgate.Ottawa Ottawa route addprivate 44.102.24/24 encap 75.134.184.102 Hamgate.Livingston Livingston (not in service) route addprivate 44.102.200/22 encap 74.85.194.5 Hamgatye.Midland Midland route addprivate 44.102.1/24 encap 23.115.92.204 Hamgate.Washtenaw Washtenaw route addprivate 44.102.48/24 encap 23.115.92.204 Hamgate.Washtenaw Wayne route addprivate 44.102.56/24 encap 23.115.92.204 Hamgate.Washtenaw Monroe route addprivate 44.102.238/24 encap 75.133.38.102 Hamgate.Alcona Alcona (not in service) route addprivate 44.102.172/22 encap 96.36.5.237 Emm/Char/Cheb ???? route addprivate 44.102.100/24 encap 75.75.220.86 Hamgate.Eaton Eaton route addprivate 44.102.104/24 encap 75.75.220.86 Hamgate.Eaton Ingham route addprivate 44.102.128/24 encap 44.102.128.1 Hamgate.Kent Kent (not in service)

  10. What does the Michigan AMPRnet need to accomplish:

  11. The DRG needs to help promote: The moving of bits from Point-A to Point-B The moving of ICS Forms, EASILY That we need more Hamgates (obviously) That we need more End Users / Home Stations (ready pool of trained operators and available hardware) More Education in using OutPost, FLDIGI and FLMSG and ICS Form templates We need DRG Quarterly meetings We need DEC's and EC's to integrate AMPRnet into their Plans

  12. How will we get there???

  13. What's NEW that we didn't have then? We now have WB8RCR's Pidora-JNOS package Ubiquiti & MikroTik RF routers are now inexpensive ways of deploying MAN networks (Metropolitan Area Network) BB-HAMNET (HSMM-Mesh) has left WRT54G and migrated onto Ubiquiti microwave router hardware MI6WAN uwave network across portions of the State (44.103/19) as part of the CMEN network of repeaters (HG backbone???)

  14. ARRL Table at the Livonia Swap

  15. DRG District Representatives(Appointed by the DEC's) STAFF CHANGES: D1 – Dennis Boone KB8ZQZ & Patrick Shannon W8LNO D2 – Jay Nugent WB8TKL & (TBD) D3 – (yet to be determined) D5 – Ron Schubot N8CML & (TBD) D6 – (yet to be determined) D7 – Red Duggan WA8RLI & Ed Bassett N8FVM D8 – (yet to be determined)

  16. Goals for 2016: Restore many of the defunct Hamgates plus add new ones Fix what gets broken in the March 2016 DNS “Purge” Train more users in the use of OutPost (incl ICS forms) Train more users in the use of FLDIGI/FLMSG (incl ICS forms) Promote more use of HSMM-Mesh, Ubiquiti, MikroTik, and WiFi Deploy more NetROM/X1J4 nodes, and Multi-ported nodes, for better long-haul linking Continue migration to Multi-Layered networks and the use of County/District/Regional “Local Access” frequencies Get more Clubs involved!!!! Go for the “Critical Mass”. Hold Quarterly DRG meetings (Cheerleading & Training)

  17. Thank You for your Participation!!! Submitted to the: ARRL Michigan Section Staff meeting March 5th, 2012 Lansing, Michigan By: Jay Nugent WB8TKL wb8tkl@arrl.net jjn@nuge.com (734)484-5105 Completely produced using Open Source software: “LibraOffice – Impress” on Fedora-18 Linux “In a world without fences, who needs Gates!”

  18. Local Access Frequencies by District • This proposal is a first attempt to move away from a single collision domain, and towards a network based on “Gateway” nodes. This positions us to more easily implement a “backbone” connecting the Gateway nodes. • First published in Oct '05, a few stations are already appearing on the new frequencies • NOTE: This map is now out of date

  19. Technical Milestones: WINLINK 2000 Deployment of “TelPac” code onto Hamgates still planned RMS code currently undergoing Beta test CMS “Failover” failed for several days CONVERSE BRIDGE NETWORK Change in “Hierarchy Tree” still underway Channel 911 used during Statewide events (S.E.T.) Channel 411 being used during Skywarn events Sat/Sun 8pm Channel-41 Nets still active NTSMI.ampr.org

  20. D1 D-Star Project $87,000 Grant Coordinated by Jon KC8VAB and Jim WB8AZP 18 D-Star repeaters & 13 2820 rigs (for EOC's) 2m & 440 repeater for each of the 9 counties All linked via the Internet Voice ONLY network, at this time DATA is yet to be determined

  21. S.E.T. - Lessons Learned 145.76 is too congested!!! Work is underway to migrate more districts off 145.76 onto other freqs. Too few Operators know how to use the Network!!! More training needs to be performed More daily use will help increase the number of trained operators

  22. QMN Packet Network Decommissioning: The QMN Board of Directors voted to turn over their Packet Radio assets to the DRG. The DAPR group in Grand Rapids will be responsible for the management of these assets per the conditions set forth by the QMN in the agreement.

  23. FREQUENCY CHANGES: D1-South switching to 145.05 D2-South (Wash/Wayne) switching to 147.58 D2-North determining what freq to use D6 (RedCross.Kent) moving off 145.76 to yet to be determined freq D6 & D7 have too many counties on 145.07 that will need to be dealt with NOTE: Most of the above are in an effort to relieve congestion in D1-North (SEOC) on 145.76 MARC dropped support of 12 “Packet” frequencies

  24. Problem Areas and their Resolutions: EDUCATION!!!!!! - Fewer Hams understand Classic Packet than they once did. Re-education of the Amateur public through DRG offered Training Classes is necessary to re-build that wealth of operators we once had. Limited sharing of DRG material through the DEC's to their EC's and others in their districts – It is hoped that the DRG Rep's and the DEC's will filter down material from the DRG reflector to their EC's in hopes of getting more involvement from the rank & file. Section Staff may assist in helping to resolve this by pushing on the Leadership a wee bit. INTEGRATION!!! – In Many users do not understand TCP/IP. In order for users to provide “Integration”, we need to provide simple cookie-cutter solutions and training classes to teach them about ethernets, routing, SMTP, POP3, telnet, etc. in order to interconnect a Served Agencies network with the Michigan AMPRnet. NTSD – We need to develop “processes” that would allow users to pass NTS traffic by addressing it to i.e. NTS@MINTSD and be assured an NTS operator would pick up the traffic and move it to it's final destination.
