Background of the Apostle Paul(Acts 9:1-16; 22:3; Phil. 3:5-6) • Born in Tarsus of Cilicia • Circumcised the eighth day • Of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin; initially named after that tribe’s most distinguished member • Educated under Gamaliel • A Hebrew of Hebrews, and a Roman Citizen raised in the city • As to the Law, a Pharisee • As to zeal, a persecutor of the church • As to the righteousness which is in the Law, found blameless • Radically converted to Christ on the road to Damascus and appointed as apostle to the Gentiles

  4. Overview of Paul’s Ministry After Conversion • 34-35: Paul’s conversion; he immediately begins to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues of Damascus. When the Jews sought to kill him, he fled. After time in Arabia, he returned to Damascus. • 37-38: First visit to Jerusalem 3 years after his conversion. Stays with Peter for 15 days, and meets James. When the Hellenistic Jews there seek to kill him, the brethren send him away to Tarsus. • 45-46: Paul and Barnabas journey from Antioch to Jerusalem, to provide financial relief from the famine. They return to Antioch after they deliver the offering. • 47-48: Paul and Barnabas are sent out from the church at Antioch on their first missionary tour. • 49: Paul and Barnabas attend the Council in Jerusalem, return to Antioch. • 49-51: Second missionary tour, this one with Silas. Paul writes 1 and 2 Thessalonians.

  5. Overview of Paul’s Ministry After Conversion • 52-56: Paul sets out on his third missionary tour. During this trip he writes 1 and 2 Corinthians, Romans, and Galatians. • 57-59: Paul visits Jerusalem and is arrested. He appears before the Sanhedrin, and is later taken to Caesarea and imprisoned. There he appears before Felix and Drusilla, then Festus, and then Agrippa. He appeals to Caesar, and is sent to Rome. • 59-60: Paul makes the shipwrecked journey to Rome, staying at Malta 3 months along the way. • 60-62: Paul’s first Roman imprisonment. He writes Ephesians, Colossians, Philemon, and Philippians. • 62-66: Paul is released from prison and possibly makes the trip to Spain. He writes 1 Timothy from Macedonia. He visits Crete and later writes an epistle to Titus there. • 66-68: Paul’s second Roman imprisonment. He writes 2 Timothy, and is subsequently executed by Nero.
